National Wonju Cultural Heritage Research Institute opens the "Land of Time, Jeonbuk" exhibition space.
The National Wonju Cultural Heritage Research Institute, located in Iseo-myeon, Wonju-gun, Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province, has opened an exhibition space showcasing its excavation achievements.
This research institute, under the Cultural Heritage Administration, has been investigating and researching cultural heritage from the prehistoric to the Joseon Dynasty in the Jeonbuk region. The exhibition space allows citizens to see these achievements firsthand.
Part 1: Settling in the Land of Abundance - From Prehistory to Antiquity
The first floor exhibition covers the process of human settlement and cultural development in the Jeonbuk region from prehistoric times to antiquity. Notably, it features artifacts and research results directly from excavation sites.
The Wansangun Tombs in Sangun-ri, Wonju, are considered key relics of the Mahan Culture in Jeonbuk. Since 2022, the National Wonju Cultural Heritage Research Institute has conducted detailed excavations in the area, uncovering nine tombs.
Among the findings is a "jeonyongongwan" (ceramic burial jar) dating back to the 3rd to 4th century, with evidence of repaired fragments, making it a rare case in the Jeonbuk region. Other artifacts include glass beads, various pottery, and ironware, showcasing the hierarchy and burial culture of the Mahan people.
The Gaesadong Shell Mound in Gunsan is an intriguing site that illustrates ancient international exchanges along the western coast of Jeonbuk. Here, a pottery base believed to be from Japan's Yayoi period was discovered, along with various shellfish and pottery.
Notably, rare seal bones were found, along with the shoulder bone of a young pig and a dog's jawbone, suggesting that Gunsan may have served as a port for ancient maritime exchanges.
Part 2: The Vast Land Holds Diverse Stories - History and Life of the Region
The second part of the exhibition highlights historical traces and lifestyles from various locations in Jeonbuk, including the Iksan embankment site, the Namgye-ri site in Wonju, and the celadon kiln site in Buan.
This area is also where the remains of Korea's first Catholic martyrs, Yoon Ji-chung and Kwon Sang-yeon, as well as Yoon Ji-hyun, who was martyred during the Shinyu Persecution, were discovered.
In March 2021, while working on the sanctification project of the Chonam Holy Site, the Jeonju Diocese uncovered their remains and a white porcelain bowl stone while organizing an unmarked grave about 900 meters north of the site.
The Wonju government confirmed the site's historical significance, not only for its religious value but also for research on the late Joseon period. It has been designated as a cultural heritage site in November 2022 and is set to be promoted for national heritage designation.
The children's experience room, "Doran Doran Time Playground," is designed for kids to engage with excavation and artifacts at their eye level.
The open library allows visitors to freely browse materials related to Jeonbuk's cultural heritage, making it easy to delve deeper into topics of interest after viewing the exhibition.
Additionally, digital content spaces featuring LED media art and immersive video provide a vivid experience of excavation sites that are difficult to convey through text and artifacts alone.
The achievement promotion space at the National Wonju Cultural Heritage Research Institute is meaningful as it goes beyond merely displaying artifacts and tells the stories of actual excavation sites.
From the tombs of Mahan to traces of Korea's first Catholic martyrs, visitors can encounter the stories buried beneath Jeonbuk's soil all in one place, and admission is free, making it a convenient stop for those visiting Wonju.
