Last June, Geumgang Arboretum was closed, but this autumn, it will reopen.
On September 16, Chungcheongnam-do and Sejong City signed a memorandum of understanding for the reopening and joint operation of Geumgang Arboretum.
The arboretum opened temporarily from September 21, just before the Chuseok holiday.
I was eager to see what Geumgang Arboretum looks like now, so I visited on the first day of the temporary opening.
During this temporary opening period, not all facilities are available for use.
Currently, outdoor spaces like the yellow clay meta-path and walking trails are accessible.
However, the accommodation facilities at Geumgang Natural Recreation Forest, the tropical greenhouse, and the forest museum will undergo comprehensive inspections and remodeling before being gradually opened.
The official opening is scheduled for January 2027, and I am excited to see how it will change.
It’s also good to check the operating hours in advance. From March to October, it operates from 9 AM to 6 PM, and from November to February, it runs from 9 AM to 5 PM.
Moreover, the first and third Wednesdays of every month are closed, so it's advisable to keep that in mind before visiting.
Until the official opening in December, both parking fees and entrance fees are free.
Visitors can check in at the kiosk at the entrance and register their numbers before entering.
After the official opening, I am curious about how discounts or benefits for Sejong citizens will change.
Thanks to the news of the reopening, there were quite a few visitors from the morning of the first day.
Arriving at Geumgang Arboretum after a year, I felt a wave of nostalgia and happiness.
Most importantly, I was delighted to think that I could soon see the autumn foliage in Geumgang Arboretum again.
At the entrance, there were still banners asking for understanding as it was not yet officially open.
As I stepped inside, I felt the cool breeze and the autumn atmosphere.
Although it wasn't peak foliage season yet, fallen leaves were already visible on the ground.
I could feel the deepening autumn in my whole body, as if it had never been hot.
This space is perfect for a light stroll or enjoying nature with family, making it a great spot for those looking for a fall outing.
The highlight of Geumgang Arboretum is undoubtedly the meta-sequoia yellow clay path.
This area is particularly well-known for barefoot walking, with facilities for washing feet available for users.
The tall meta-sequoia trees lined up on both sides were truly magnificent, and the shade provided by the dense trees made it feel cool even at noon.
However, on the day I visited, the path was not yet fully maintained due to the temporary opening.
The yellow clay was a bit hard and dry, which made it less enjoyable for barefoot walking.
As it is still a temporary opening and maintenance is ongoing, I expect it will be improved to become a more walkable path in the future.
Even on the way back, the scenery created by the meta-sequoia was stunning.
Geumgang Arboretum also has areas that children will love, with various facilities for kids to experience nature up close.
There are spaces like an insect hotel, giant spider, treehouse, and zipline to stimulate children's curiosity.
If you visit with children, exploring these areas and experiencing nature directly in the forest would be a great idea.
Currently, the forest museum and café are not operating due to the temporary opening.
With time left until the official opening next year, I believe the various facilities will be enhanced to provide a richer experience.
After a year, visiting Geumgang Arboretum again, I felt the essence of autumn just by walking along the forest paths.
Since it is currently a temporary opening, rather than expecting a completed arboretum, it would be best to focus on enjoying the available outdoor spaces with a light stroll.
If you want to enjoy nature and take a slow walk during this Chuseok holiday, visiting Geumgang Arboretum would be a delightful option.
