Hello!

Last weekend, I decided to enjoy the refreshing breeze by the Han River and take a light stroll with my family.

We visited the 'Haengju Fortress Historical Park'. As usual, we spread out a mat to relax, when suddenly, we heard the lively sounds of traditional music echoing from somewhere nearby.

Curious, we followed the sound.

Fortunately, that day, the park was hosting a festival that vividly recreated the old Han River port culture of Goyang!

The '11th Goyang Haengju Fortress River Festival' was in full swing!

It was a celebration that offered a different kind of depth and emotion compared to typical festivals, and I wanted to share the vibrant experiences and meanings from that day.

We learned stories about the Han River and memories of Haengju Nar.

In fact, while lying on the grass and gazing at the Han River, I realized I had never deeply considered the 'history' of this place.

Haengju Nar was once a vital transportation hub connecting the West Sea and Hanyang, and it served as an essential living space that linked Gimpo and Goyang.

Every day, our ancestors would go out to the river to cast their nets, praying for peace and a bountiful catch, which is what this 'River Festival' represents.

Beyond mere spectacles, the festival shared the rich history and culture of the old fishing villages that we stand upon with the community.

The event was a blend of solemnity and joy, showcasing traditional performances that captivated everyone.

The festival opened with the energetic performance of the 'Pungmul' troupe, which got the entire park buzzing with excitement.

The sounds of 'jing' and 'gwaenggwari' resonated in my heart, and I found myself swaying to the rhythm.

The lively trot performances, infused with our traditional sounds, instantly lifted the atmosphere among the audience.

Following that, the enchanting 'Taepyeongmu' reminded us of the beauty and grace of traditional Korean dance.

Sitting on the grass and witnessing all these high-quality traditional performances was the best gift I could have received during our weekend outing.

The highlight of the traditional Han River festival was undoubtedly the 'Welcoming of the Dragon God' and the 'Dragon King's Rite', set against the backdrop of the Han River.

The 'Dragon King's Rite', performed on the open stage of the Han River, was truly spectacular.

Experiencing a 'gut' that I had only seen in books or documentaries firsthand was a surreal and thrilling experience.

It reminded me of our ancestors' humility in front of nature and their wishes for each other's well-being.

Many people stayed to watch the performance for a long time, captivated by the event.

We were also treated to 'tteok' and 'sikhye', adding to the warmth of the gathering.

This is an annual event, and if you have the chance, I highly recommend attending.

The latter part of the festival included an entertaining sound play from 'Su-gung-jeon', delightful folk songs, and traditional performances that deeply immersed me in the vibrant spirit of traditional arts.

This year's 'Goyang Haengju Fortress River Festival' was not just a one-sided performance to observe the past.

It was a true 'community celebration' where neighbors came together to enjoy and share.

In a time when the concept of 'neighborly love' seems to fade, gathering in such an open park to pray for abundance and peace reminded me of the warm values of 'community' that we often forget.

Just as our ancestors found comfort and strength through 'gut' and 'pungmul', I felt a significant sense of solace amidst my busy life.

It was a day filled with Goyang's unique Han River cultural content, rich in history, culture, and human connection.

The memories made at 'Haengju Fortress Historical Park' will surely remain warm for a long time.

If this noble and joyous Han River festival is held again next year, I would love to visit once more!
