I visited the 19th Gochang Incident Memorial Park Chrysanthemum Exhibition.
On October 23, 2026 (Friday),
there will be a small barefoot walking event between 10 AM and 11 AM.
Upon entering the memorial park, I was surprised by the numerous pots of chrysanthemums.
The exhibition runs from October 19 (Monday) to November 1 (Sunday), 2026.
During the festival, food will be available, including traditional snacks and Cafe Luna221.
The Gochang Incident Memorial Park is not far from the Sinwon-myeon office, so visitors can enjoy meals nearby.
There are many beautiful chrysanthemum pots perfect for photo spots.
The red leaves of the daepssari complement the chrysanthemums beautifully.
A large butterfly made of chrysanthemums was also on display.
The white chrysanthemums may look black, but they are just not fully bloomed yet.
There were heart shapes made from vibrant red chrysanthemums, resembling autumn leaves.
I hope many people come to see the autumn leaves in Gochang along with the chrysanthemums.
I also had the opportunity to appreciate works that won awards in the Gochang Incident Youth Literary Contest.
The works are from 2025 and 2026.
Above the tiger sculpture, the wind turbines of Gamaksan are spinning vigorously.
Near the history education center, there is a chrysanthemum flower maze.
At first, I wondered what shape it was, but it resembled a hand.
There are also towers, chrysanthemum benches, and dinosaurs, making it a great place for photos when the flowers bloom.
I entered the history education center, which explains the Gochang Incident.
There is a place to leave messages in memory of those who lost their lives in the Gochang Incident.
During the chrysanthemum exhibition, the interior of the history education center was also decorated with flowers, creating a bright atmosphere.
The Gochang Incident refers to the event in February 1951, during the Korean War, where civilians were sacrificed by the military in Sinwon-myeon, Gochang-gun.
Many innocent residents, including children and women, lost their lives.
On March 29, 1951, Shin Joong-mok, a member of the National Assembly from Gochang, alerted the assembly about this incident, leading to a thorough investigation.
The pain of the Gochang Incident has been reflected in literature and films, including Kim Won-il's novel "Winter Valley" and Kim Jae-soo's film "Cheongya," which remind us of the tragedies faced by civilians during the Korean War.
A list of 719 victims was displayed, and I was able to leave a message in the guestbook for the victims.
There is also a resting area within the history museum where visitors can relax comfortably.
The phrase "Beyond Empathy to Healing" was beautifully crafted with chrysanthemums.
On October 23, 2026, between 10 AM and 11 AM, a small barefoot walking event will take place near the history education center.
If you complete the walk, you will receive a small souvenir.
Join in the chrysanthemum exhibition and participate in the barefoot walk!
The Gochang Incident Memorial Park features unique barefoot paths made of clay and silica sand.
I walked barefoot on the silica sand, and there were facilities nearby for convenience.
On October 24-25 and October 31-November 1, there will also be a new variety chrysanthemum evaluation event.
After participating in the chrysanthemum evaluation, you can present a coupon at the history education center to create your own chrysanthemum pot.
Experience time: 10 AM - 12 PM, 1 PM - 3 PM.
The future chrysanthemum garden displayed various new varieties, showcasing the diversity of pink chrysanthemums.
The future chrysanthemum garden evaluation was arranged in four rows, allowing ample time for appreciation.
On the way back to the parking lot, I saw sculptures of the fox and crane from Aesop's fables.
The crane was holding a flask, and the fox had a plate.
There was also a large fountain, providing a refreshing atmosphere while viewing the chrysanthemums.
It was a meaningful time to appreciate the beautifully blooming chrysanthemums, remember the victims, and reflect on the importance of peace.
