The Miracle of Sirusum Island: A New Landmark in Danyang, Chungbuk

The temporary opening of the Sirusum Island Ecological Exploration Bridge in Danyang, Chungbuk
Hello everyone~~
We are the Chungbuk Supporters, dedicated to sharing the hidden beauty and vibrant values of Chungcheongbuk-do with its residents.
Have you heard about the newly established landmark in Danyang, the Sirusum Island Ecological Exploration Bridge, which boasts the title of the longest pedestrian bridge in Korea?
In this season of warm sunshine and lush greenery, the mountains and sky of Danyang were exceptionally beautiful yesterday.
Today, we bring you news of a remarkable new attraction that will become a point of pride for Chungcheongbuk-do and a significant part of Korea's tourism history.
With a total project cost of 21.4 billion KRW, the Sirusum Island Ecological Exploration Bridge stretches 617 meters in length and 1.8 meters in width, making it an impressive structure.
It is said to be the longest pedestrian bridge in Korea, crossing the Namhan River.
Walking while overlooking the breathtaking views of the Namhan River is truly exhilarating and can be confidently regarded as the best in the country.
However, what makes this bridge truly special is its historical significance.
Fifty years ago, in August 1972, Typhoon Betty caused the Namhan River to flood fiercely, leading to a life-threatening crisis where the entire Sirusum Island was submerged.
At that time, more than 240 residents who were isolated on the island had no place to escape and managed to climb onto a small concrete water tank, measuring 5 meters in diameter and 6 meters in height.
In a space barely large enough for a hundred people, over 240 residents held hands and created a human chain to endure the torrential downpour in pitch-black darkness.
Tragically, during the night, a baby succumbed to the pressure of the crowd in its mother's arms. The mother, fearing that any sign of distress might cause the group to break and be swept away by the river, silently endured her grief until dawn.
Those residents managed to survive for 14 hours, relying on one another, and were dramatically rescued the following morning.
This touching and miraculous story of Sirusum Island remains a great symbol of the community spirit of sacrifice and perseverance in South Korea.
Afterwards, in 1985, the construction of the Chungju Dam completely submerged Sirusum Island, leaving it a desolate land overgrown with weeds.
However, Chungcheongbuk-do and Danyang-gun worked for many years to create this ecological exploration bridge to forever remember this historical space and the spirit of sacrifice of its residents, transforming the island of despair into a beacon of hope and miracles.
As you cross the bridge, if you hold this story in your heart, you will feel the urgency and warm love that the residents experienced, bringing a deep sense of emotion.
The Sirusum Island Ecological Exploration Bridge is beautifully adorned in a mystical and elegant purple.
Currently, it is temporarily open until June 28th, ahead of its official opening in early July.
Please note that it is closed on weekdays and only open on weekends, Saturday and Sunday, from 10 AM to 5 PM, with entry closing at 4:30 PM.
If you arrive after 4:30 PM, access will be restricted.
It is also recommended to visit the nearby moss tunnel, where the green moss-covered walls create a mystical atmosphere.
Chungcheongbuk-do highly recommends this summer's top travel destination.
