A Visit to the Modern Medical Museum in Geochang

My mother recently visited the Geochang Modern Medical Museum (formerly the Jaeseong Clinic) through the Geochang Half-Price Travel program.
This experience made me realize once again that such a special historical site is located nearby!
The Geochang Modern Medical Museum was established to preserve the Jaeseong Clinic, the first modern medical facility in Geochang, which was founded in 1954.
The founder, Dr. Seong Su-hyeon, was a graduate of the first class of Seoul National University College of Medicine and served as a military doctor during the Korean War before opening a hospital in Geochang.
For decades, he played a central role in the health of local residents and the medical community in Geochang.
Although the clinic closed in 2006 and was almost lost to history, it was designated as a registered cultural heritage site due to donations from the family and preservation efforts by Geochang County, and it has now been reborn as a modern medical museum.
The museum is not just an old hospital building; it preserves the consultation rooms, inpatient rooms, and the doctor's residence from that era, allowing visitors to vividly glimpse the medical scene of the 1950s to 1970s.
In particular, the ondol-style inpatient rooms and old medical equipment create an atmosphere entirely different from today's hospitals.
The building itself is impressive, combining traditional Korean and Western architectural styles, which adds to its architectural value.
The traces of time are still present, making it feel like a journey back to the past.
What surprised me most was that such a meaningful historical site is located right in the center of Geochang's old town.
It's remarkable to think that hidden within a street that one might usually pass by is a space that embodies the modern medical history of Geochang and the lives of its residents, reminding us of the preciousness of local cultural heritage.
If you are planning a trip to Geochang, I recommend visiting this historical and cultural site along with the famous tourist attractions.
It seems to be a meaningful place that can evoke memories for the older generation and provide new learning experiences for the younger generation.
Thanks to my mother, I had the opportunity to revisit the Geochang Modern Medical Museum.
It was delightful and impressive to discover that such a special history is alive in a place so close to home.
If you have the chance, I encourage you to visit again.
