Shinan County Takes Action Against Rising Sea Temperatures

Shinan County has stepped up in response to rising sea temperatures.
With the ongoing high temperatures this summer, the risk of mortality among farmed fish has increased.
To mitigate the damage to fishermen and protect marine resources, Shinan County has initiated proactive measures.
On the 14th, Shinan County began an emergency release of 80,000 rock bream in Aphae-eup, with plans to release a total of 820,000 fish throughout August.
Emergency release to reduce high-temperature damage
This release was prompted by a high-temperature advisory issued on July 27 for certain areas, including Heuksan-myeon.
As water temperatures rise, the risk of mortality for farmed fish increases, necessitating a reduction in stocking density within farms.
This measure aims to prevent damage from high temperatures and alleviate the management burden on fishermen.
Three regions, including Aphae-eup, Heuksan-myeon, and Anjwa-myeon, along with 11 fish farms, are participating in this release.
820,000 fish, four times more than last year
The total emergency release this year is 820,000 fish, approximately four times larger than last year.
As concerns about ongoing high temperatures grow, Shinan County has expanded the release scale to respond more quickly and actively, alongside the active participation of fishermen.
Healthy rock bream released into the sea
The rock bream being released have passed disease inspections by the National Fisheries Products Quality Management Service.
This emergency release aims not only to reduce high-temperature damage to fish farms but also to help increase coastal marine resources as the released fish grow.
To ensure the effectiveness of the release, protective measures such as fishing bans and gear restrictions in the release areas will be strengthened in cooperation with local fishing communities.
Working closely with fishermen on-site
Kim Tae-sung, the mayor of Shinan County, emphasized the need for national funding support for fish farmers who struggle with recurring high temperatures.
He pledged to continue efforts to secure new projects for management stability and damage prevention.
Shinan County will continue to respond swiftly to changing marine environments, ensuring that fishermen can carry on their livelihoods with some peace of mind.
The efforts to protect the valuable livelihoods of fishermen and the rich marine resources of Shinan County will continue.
