Welcome to the dawn of 2026, a year filled with new hopes!
This New Year, I wanted to start my journey in a special way, so I headed to Seongheungsanseong, a famous landmark in Buyeo, Chungcheongnam-do, known for its love tree.
The scene of the sunrise, where history and romance coexist, was truly breathtaking. Let me share the vivid experience with you!
Early Morning Journey to the Sunrise Spot
As expected from a sunrise spot, the road leading to Seongheungsanseong was already crowded with people and vehicles by 5 AM. The sight of cars lined up with their headlights on in the narrow alleys captured the excitement and anticipation of those welcoming the New Year.
After parking, I made my way to the entrance of Seongheungsanseong, where I saw people quietly ascending the mountain, cutting through the chilly morning air.
At the entrance, traffic control personnel braved the cold weather to ensure the safety of citizens. It was heartwarming to see them warming up by a crackling bonfire and engaging in conversation. I felt grateful for their efforts in keeping everyone safe.
Historical Landmarks Along the Way
As I walked a bit further, I reached a spot marked by a sign for Seongheungsa Temple, alongside the Gariim Tree and the Daejo Temple monument. This place holds deep historical significance beyond just being a sunrise spot.
* A little historical insight!
Gariimseong (Seongheungsanseong): This mountain fortress was built in the 23rd year of King Dongseong of Baekje (501 AD) and served as an important fortress protecting the capital of Baekje, Sabi (Buyeo). It is the only known fortress wall in Baekje with a confirmed construction date, making it highly valuable historically.
Daejo Temple: Located at the foot of Seongheungsan, this temple gets its name from a legend of a giant golden bird that landed here. It houses a designated treasure, a large stone statue of the Maitreya Bodhisattva, making it a must-visit alongside Gariimseong.
Festive Atmosphere at the Summit
I reached the parking area near the summit of Seongheungsanseong. Normally, vehicles can drive up here, but on this day of the sunrise event, walking was necessary for safety.
This location is famous for its beautiful scenery, having been the backdrop for numerous dramas and films, including "Hotel Del Luna" and "Alchemy of Souls." Nearby, emergency vehicles were on standby, providing reassurance.
As I climbed the steep stone stairs, I finally arrived at the summit where the famous love tree stands. The sound of a grand drumming performance filled the air, enhancing the festive atmosphere.
At the top, many people had gathered, eagerly waiting for the sun to rise. Various booths were set up, including a calligraphy station where visitors could have their wishes beautifully written, a wish note station, and even a medical support team, all organized systematically.
The food booths were particularly popular! To warm up chilly visitors, they were serving hot rice cake soup and tea. A bowl of rice cake soup, accompanied by freshly made kimchi, was simply delicious.
The First Sunrise of 2026
Finally, the moment we had all been waiting for arrived! A red glow appeared on the horizon as the first sun of 2026 began to rise. People erupted in cheers, each making their own wishes.
As the sun gradually revealed itself, colorful fireworks burst into the sky. The combination of the blue sky, the red sun, and the vibrant fireworks created a stunning spectacle. I felt all the hardships of the previous year fade away, replaced by a sense of hope.
The sunrise at Buyeo Seongheungsanseong was the perfect blend of solemnity and festive spirit, making it an unforgettable experience. If you wish to welcome the New Year under the love tree with your loved ones, make sure to visit this place next year!
