Wishing for the New Year at Bongeunsa Temple

Bongeunsa Temple is a peaceful spiritual space located in the heart of Gangnam, Seoul.
At the beginning of 2026, it became a meaningful place to reflect, make wishes, and start the year with calm intention.
With free admission, long opening hours, and beautiful lantern displays, it is an ideal New Year visit spot.
Welcoming 2026 at Bongeunsa Temple
Did you make your New Year’s wishes for 2026?
I visited Bongeunsa Temple to begin the year with a calm heart and quiet reflection.
Although I don’t follow a specific religion, this temple is a place I often return to when I need clarity.
This was already my third visit.

A Temple Hidden in the City
Despite being surrounded by busy city streets, Bongeunsa is surprisingly spacious.
There are many corners to explore, and the atmosphere remains calm throughout the grounds.
Temple stay programs are also offered here and are especially popular among international visitors.
Making New Year Wishes
As I walked up the stairs, I saw the main office and the area for making offerings.
Wish candles were prepared for each zodiac sign.
Last year, I made a sincere wish here—and it came true.
This time, I carefully read the meanings and chose a wish candle for my zodiac sign, the snake.
After deciding on the offering, payment could be made by cash or bank transfer.
The self-service system allowed me to take my time.
I chose a bank transfer, and there was an ATM nearby for convenience.
Lanterns, Prayers, and Quiet Moments
Holding a marker, I wrote my wish for 2026.
On the way to the main hall, I noticed colorful wish lanterns that weren’t there during my last visit.
Wishes were written in many languages, making the space feel even more meaningful.
I placed my candle in an empty spot, lit it, and prayed sincerely.
Maitreya Buddha and Evening Views
This is Mireuksaji, the large statue of Maitreya Buddha.
During my previous visit, there were no lotus lanterns, but this time LED lights were installed.
I imagine the view at night must be stunning.
If possible, visiting Bongeunsa in the evening is highly recommended.
Buddhist Goods and Closing Thoughts
Before leaving, I stopped by the Buddhist goods shop.
Many items were clearly popular with foreign visitors.
I was drawn to a fish-shaped silver ring but decided not to buy it this time.
Maybe I’ll return on Buddha’s Birthday and see if I still want it.
Starting 2026 at Bongeunsa Temple filled me with a quiet sense of hope.
This year, I want to live each day without regrets.
I wish everyone reading this a peaceful and happy 2026.
