One of the highlights of my recent trip was a day trip to Gapado Island.

I wanted to experience the unique feeling of traveling from island to island in Jeju, so I visited Gapado.

The ferry departs from Unjin Port. I've compiled everything you need to know, from the ferry schedule to the island's scenery, so keep reading!

About Gapado Island

Gapado Island is located in Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo City. It's very close to Mara Island, the southernmost island of Korea, and only a 10-minute ferry ride from Unjin Port.

In spring, the island is covered in green barley, in summer, beautiful flowers bloom, and in autumn, eulalia grass waves in the breeze. This makes it a perfect destination to visit in Jeju in November.

Location:

Gapari 276, Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo City

Parking:

Available at Unjin Port

Admission:

Free (ferry fare separate)

Travel Time:

10 minutes one way

1. Unjin Port Passenger Terminal

I visited the Unjin Port Passenger Terminal to travel to Gapado Island.

The parking lot is quite large! There are many spaces in front of the waiting room, but if it's full, there's a long parking area next to it. Be prepared to walk a bit and park comfortably.

The first ferry departing from Unjin Port is at 09:20, and the last is at 16:10. The schedule may change depending on weather conditions or other circumstances, so it's best to check real-time operation information before departing.

Gapado Ferry Fare

Here is the ferry fare information.

The regular fare for adults is 15,500 won, Jeju residents get a discount and pay 13,000 won, and children pay 7,800 won. Discounts are also available for seniors, military personnel, and others.

3. How to Use the Ferry

To travel to Gapado Island, the first thing you need to do is issue a boarding pass. The order of ticketing is: 1. Fill out the embarkation form, 2. Bring your ID, 3. Issue your ticket and move to the boarding area.

Filling out the embarkation form is simple. Fill in the required information such as name, gender, and date of birth, bring your ID, and go to the counter to issue your ticket. One representative can issue tickets for the group, but you must have the IDs of everyone boarding the ferry.

If you don't have your ID, there is an unmanned civil application issuing machine behind the line.

4. Gapado Island Map

With about 15 minutes left after completing the procedures, I looked around the waiting room. There was a map of Gapado Island and photos displayed nicely. I took a picture of it to refer to when exploring the island.

As you can see in the picture, the island's shape resembles a stingray. There are many small attractions related to nature, such as Gonaengi Stone, Boreum Rock, and Somang Observatory, so save the map.

5. Boarding Area, Boarding Blue Ray No. 3

As the Gapado ferry time approached, I moved to the boarding area. Our family's reserved ferry time was 12:00 noon, and we lined up 5 minutes in advance. The sea breeze was quite strong, so there's no need to come out too early. Lining up 5 minutes before is enough.

The ferry that safely transported our family was Blue Ray No. 3. The exterior is cute!

The interior of the ferry was also clean. There are plenty of seats on the first floor, but if you go up to the second floor, there is a pretty heart photo zone and outdoor seating. It was still warm during the day (as of the end of October), so I sat outside and enjoyed the autumn sea breeze of Jeju.

Sanbangsan Mountain, Songaksan Mountain, Hallasan Mountain

While traveling by ferry, I enjoyed the scenery outside. I could see Hallasan Mountain, the guardian of Jeju, Sanbangsan Mountain, a magnificent volcanic structure in southern Jeju, and Songaksan Mountain, famous for its beautiful walking trails, all in one frame.

It's a view that's not easily seen even within Jeju, so don't miss the wonderful scene outside, even for a moment.

Finally arrived! The travel time from Unjin Port to the island was 10 minutes. It felt like arriving as soon as we departed. I was worried because I usually get seasick, but fortunately, it was unfounded.

6. Bicycle Rental

When you get off the ferry and walk straight in, the first place you'll see is the bicycle rental shop. I highly recommend renting a bicycle here.

Walking is good, but after visiting several times, I found that the most fun way to explore the island is by bicycle. The fare was reasonable at 5,000 won per adult.

As a personal recommendation, it's best to keep riding along the right-hand coastal road.

The reason is that it's a great road for cycling with almost no uphill slopes, so it wasn't difficult.

Boreum Rock

While riding my bicycle, I came across a huge, round rock. It's called Boreum Rock because it's said to cause wind. The locals consider this rock sacred, so don't be reckless and climb on it, just admire it with your eyes.

7. Gapado Island Scenery

Even though there weren't any outstanding attractions, every sight was beautiful. The cozy stone walls and the wildflowers neatly nestled below,

And the eulalia grass that marked the arrival of autumn was all so pretty! I can still see it in my mind's eye.

The eulalia grass is still silver in Jeju City, but here it was in full bloom and even prettier!

So, I kept repeating the process of riding and stopping to take pictures. The only thing left is pictures, so make lots of memories!

Back to hiking! If you go up in the direction of the Olle Trail at the end of the coastal road, you can find a wide field.

Monopolizing the autumn sky with cumulus clouds and the quiet road alone was a tearfully beautiful moment.

As I entered the middle of Gapado Island, I saw a wave of yellow flowers spreading from afar, so I ran excitedly.

The pretty autumn cosmos flowers were in full bloom and looked great. Eulalia grass is pretty, but seeing flowers and hiking while looking at the sea! I felt like I made money? That's how happy I was:)

Next to the flower field, I saw a pretty cafe building that was preparing to open. I couldn't use it because it was still under construction, but the view seemed pretty and I had a feeling it would be a hot place.

I spent about 2 hours on the island in total. Many people are worried about what time to take the ferry when booking a ticket. If you are going to use a bicycle, I would recommend a ferry after 2 hours. If you plan to walk, I recommend a ferry after 3 hours! I hope this helps with your trip.

It was a good trip to Jeju Island with my family because it was easy to walk on a flat road without uphill slopes. I hope you have a happy time making happy memories with your loved ones.
