Exploring the Historical and Scenic Wolgok Village

Hello! Today, I would like to introduce you to Wolgok Village in Namhae-myeon, a place rich in history and beautiful landscapes.
Wolgok Village got its name from the shape of the terrain at the southern entrance, which resembles a half-moon, and has been called "Banwolsan" (Half-Moon Mountain) since ancient times. It was previously known as Wollyigok-ri, or 'the place where the moon is,' before settling on the name Wolgok.
In Namhae-myeon, Geochang-gun, Wolgok Village is home to Wolheon House and Choi Jinsa House, as well as the Dalishil Garden, making it a great area to explore.
Wolheon House (77 Wolgok-gil) is designated as Cultural Heritage Material No. 583. Built during the Japanese occupation, it is one of the homes of the four brothers who branched off from the Choi Jinsa House in Murung-ri, which is designated as Cultural Heritage Material No. 537 in Gyeongsangnam-do.
The house features a unique combination of a ㄷ-shaped main building and a ㄱ-shaped sarangchae (guesthouse), a rare architectural style in this region. Although small, its simple layout effectively showcases the early living conditions and lifestyles of the descendants who branched out from the family.
Choi Jinsa House, built at the end of the 19th century by Choi Won-geun, was named after Choi Hong-yeol, who passed the Jinseong examination in 1894. The house retains its original structure, allowing visitors to experience the elegance of a traditional yangban (noble) household from the late Joseon period.
The main building is a traditional Korean house with five rooms in the front and two on the side, featuring a simple tiled roof. The layout includes a kitchen, main room, large hall, and a small room, each with varying widths of wooden verandas in front.
To the right of the courtyard in Choi Jinsa House is a storeroom with three long rooms, clearly defined by the spacing of the pillars, providing ample storage space.
The ㄱ-shaped sarangchae is also a modern hanok, featuring five rooms in the front and 1.5 rooms on the side, with a unique two-room veranda that creates the ㄱ-shaped layout.
Dalishil Garden (86-10 Wolgok-gil) was registered as a private garden on August 4, 2023, covering an area of 6,860 square meters, with 6,594 square meters of green space.
This garden features a walking area with pine trees, fountains, and a rainbow bridge. Currently, the museum is closed to the public, but there are facilities such as a restaurant and pension within the garden.
While exploring Choi Jinsa House and Wolheon House, I could closely appreciate the essence of the hanok space. Later, at Dalishil Garden, I took a moment to breathe in the serene scenery.
I plan to revisit Wolgok Village in a different season, eager to explore the unique features of the houses and gardens once again. This journey, connecting tradition and nature, made for a day that left a lasting impression as I walked slowly and took in the sights.
