A Spring Journey to Goljeong Reservoir Cherry Blossoms

In the spring, when cherry blossoms bloom beautifully, there is a highly anticipated travel destination: Goljeong Reservoir in Dangjin.
The cherry blossoms here are special because they bloom along a heart-shaped reservoir, enhanced by lighting that makes the scenery even more dazzling at night.
On April 8, the cherry blossoms at Goljeong Reservoir were nearly in full bloom, with a blooming rate of 90%.
Located in the center of Myeoncheon-myeon, Dangjin City, Goljeong Reservoir is an agricultural reservoir with a circumference of 319 meters, a depth of 3.3 meters, and an area of about 9,900 square meters. From above, it forms a heart shape.
In 1797, Park Ji-won, the governor of Myeoncheon, excavated a neglected wetland for agricultural water and built an artificial island in the middle of the reservoir, topped with a thatched pavilion.
The reason Goljeong Reservoir is so beloved in spring is that the cherry blossoms bloom densely along its banks. The city of Dangjin has created walking paths and installed lighting, making it an ideal spot for evening visits.
On a chilly early evening, I visited Goljeong Reservoir with my camera to capture the night view. The parking lot is conveniently located across from the reservoir, and viewing the night scene is free and available at all times.
While it may feel warm during the day, those planning to visit for the cherry blossoms at night should definitely bring warm clothing. When I visited, the blooming rate was between 80% and 90%, varying by area.
While the cherry blossom branches extending toward the reservoir were slower to bloom, those along the walking path were almost fully open. As I travel around photographing cherry blossoms this spring, I’ve noticed that the blooms in Dangjin tend to be later than in other regions, making it a great spring travel destination for those who haven’t yet seen cherry blossoms.
The cherry blossom scenery in Dangjin will be at its most vibrant and beautiful during the second weekend of April. I strolled around the Goljeong cherry blossoms, and even after visiting for three years, I am always amazed at how beautifully they have been arranged.
Many people seem to have been waiting for the Goljeong cherry blossoms, as the area was bustling with visitors eager to see the night view even before the blossoms reached full bloom.
The restored Gyeongonilchogyeong Pavilion on the artificial island in the center of Goljeong is a hexagonal pavilion connected to the embankment by a granite bridge.
In early to mid-April, night lighting is activated, illuminating the area in various colors such as white, pink, blue, and purple as time passes.
The cherry blossoms along the walking path have reached full bloom compared to those by the reservoir, which are slightly delayed. At night, the white cherry blossoms transform into a magical sight with colorful lights.
Walking around the reservoir takes about 30 to 40 minutes, and since the cherry trees are about 40 years old, it's a pleasant experience for families with young children or elderly parents.
Expecting large crowds on weekends, I recommend visiting on a Friday. Additionally, a food truck selling snacks like chicken skewers is available near the reservoir, making it a convenient spot for a quick bite.
Goljeong is famous for its cherry blossoms in spring, but from late June to mid-July, lotus flowers bloom around the pavilion, creating another stunning sight. It’s a great destination to visit in every season.
Before heading out for photography, I wore a thick jacket to prepare for the cold, but it was still chilly, so I recommend wearing warm outerwear. Goljeong Reservoir is close to the Myeoncheon IC of the Seo-san Yeongdeok Expressway, and for those without a car, buses 450 or 522 from Dangjin Bus Terminal can take you there.
Moreover, dogs are welcome, so please ensure they are leashed for a joyful visit. This concludes my introduction to the beautiful Goljeong cherry blossoms in Dangjin.
