Daehoji-myeon in Dangjin, overlooking the Dobidoga River

Nestled between two waterways, this area is often referred to as the land of loyalty and patriotism.

It is home to Chungjangsa Shrine, which honors General Nam Yi-heung and his father, General Nam Yu, for their loyalty during the mid-Joseon period.

It was also one of the origins of the April 4th Independence Movement in 1919.

The April 4th Independence Movement is commemorated annually around March 1st, marking the largest scale of remembrance in the Dangjin area.

Additionally, the Nam Yi-heung Cultural Festival is held every October.

In 2026, it will take place from October 23rd to 24th.

Before the festival, I took a tour of the Nam Yi-heung Shrine and Chungjangsa Shrine.

The historic site consists of a relic exhibition hall, an ancestral home, a shrine, and a tomb area.

During my visit, the relic exhibition hall was closed due to the use of herbal disinfectants as part of national folk cultural heritage preservation.

Items used by General Nam Yi-heung, a military figure from the mid-Joseon period, along with family relics, have been designated as national folk cultural heritage.

These include one set of green ceremonial robes, one ceremonial robe, seven name tags, thirteen ancient documents, one portrait, and ten everyday items, totaling around 37 pieces.

At the gentle slope's entrance stands a 600-year-old zelkova tree, with the shrine adjacent to it, leading left to the tomb area.

Between the buildings, there are also Lagerstroemia trees, symbolizing the spirit of General Nam Yi-heung's loyalty.

General Nam Yi-heung was honored as a first-class military meritorious subject for his contributions in suppressing the Injo's rebellion in 1624.

He ultimately took his own life after failing to defend against the Manchu invasion during the Jeongmyo War.

His father, General Nam Yu, also fought alongside Admiral Yi Sun-sin during the Imjin War and died in the Battle of Noryang.

In the Joseon era, the government awarded honors to loyal subjects, filial sons, and virtuous women to commemorate their spirits.

The shrine is known to the public as a symbol of loyalty.

The shrine dedicated to General Nam Yi-heung features a plaque reading "Nam's Loyalty and Virtue" above its entrance.

The building has two front bays and one side bay with a unique roof design.

The northern wall displays a plaque with General Nam Yu and Nam Yi-heung's names, while the left wall features the shrine's dedication.

The shrine and the adjacent shrine have the plaque "Chungjangsa" prominently displayed.

Although the entrance is securely closed, the low wall allows a view of the interior from both the front and sides.

Constructed in 1636, it features three bays in the front and three on the side with a gabled roof.

The front area is adorned with beautiful Lagerstroemia trees, and the structure is quite sturdy.

The interior, where the memorial tablets are housed, is also closed to the public.

During the Nam Yi-heung Cultural Festival, rituals such as ancestral rites will be held, and the shrine will likely be open.

The tomb area connects along a solid wall, originally located in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, before being moved here beside Chungjangsa in 1971 due to development.

Designated as a cultural monument of South Chungcheong Province, the tomb area consists of two tiers, with the tombs of Nam Yu and Nam Yi-heung side by side.

The site includes stone markers, guardian stones, lanterns, and grave markers.

The ancestral home appears to be inhabited by descendants, and the area around the tomb and shrine has been well-maintained.

The legacy of General Nam Yi-heung and his father, General Nam Yu, is recognized, and they received land grants in the region as a reward for their loyalty, allowing their descendants to settle here.

The well-preserved relics and tombs are a testament to their enduring legacy.

Murals depicting General Nam Yi-heung's life surround the tomb area, and facilities such as restrooms and parking are conveniently available.

The Nam Yi-heung Cultural Festival features a reenactment of a parade through Dangjin, archery experiences, traditional martial arts demonstrations, a student essay contest, and an art competition.

The 2026 Nam Yi-heung Cultural Festival, held from October 23rd to 24th, will likely feature similar programs.

While it's pleasant to explore the historic figures, participating in the Nam Yi-heung Cultural Festival will enrich the experience even more.
