Must-Visit Places in Goesan County
Last weekend, the 4th Chilseong Byeolbyeol Rakjang Festival took place at Chilseong Market Street in Goesan.
Old photo studios, barbershops, and folk blacksmiths opened their doors, filling the market alley with retro vibes from the 70s and 80s.
Join us as we guide you through a festival brimming with experiences, food, and performances.
Goesan is home to traditional markets like Goesan Traditional Market and Cheongcheon Pureunnae Market. There was also the now-defunct Chilseong Market.
Along the street formed in front of the Chilseong Administrative Welfare Center, many shops thrived, bustling with people on market days. However, due to societal changes, many shops closed down, leading to a decline. Yet, in recent years, remarkable transformations have occurred.
The alley museum street of Chilseong Village, utilizing old shops like barbershops and photo studios, has been established. Young entrepreneurs have opened shops, hosting flea markets and attracting visitors once more.
The Chilseong Market Street Festival, known as Chilseong Byeolbyeol Rakjang, is held annually.
On June 13-14, the 4th Chilseong Byeolbyeol Rakjang Festival was celebrated. This year marks the 4th anniversary of the Chilseong Market Street Festival.
The festival extended from the alley leading from the Chilseong Administrative Welfare Center to Cheongin Pharmacy, featuring emotional zones, busking areas, market zones, exhibitions, and nostalgic playgrounds, known as Chilidan-gil.
Photo studios and barbershops evoked memories with their retro charm, while parents sold freshly harvested broccoli and cabbage alongside handmade crafts from young entrepreneurs.
Nostalgic snack shops, Chilseong Sanghoe, and the old barbershop offered makeup experiences, and the photo studio provided themed instant photo zones recreating school days.
The Chilseong Folk Blacksmith, with 60 years of craftsmanship, also opened its doors, hosting a special exhibition and allowing visitors to experience blacksmithing through a reservation system.
The alley museum of Chilidan-gil seamlessly connected the past retro vibes with the present.
DJ music from the 70s and 80s filled the streets, accompanied by various activities from young entrepreneurs.
Workshops included terrarium lighting creation at the Glass Workshop, aroma experiences, and a drawing competition titled "Our Village".
The festival provided a nostalgic experience for the middle-aged and a retro vibe for the youth.
The alley was recreated as it was during the bustling days of Chilseong Market, filled with retro-themed food, experiences, and play areas.
Water gun games and fishing spots opened to beat the summer heat, with children throwing water balloons and enjoying the coolness of early June.
The festival featured a variety of beloved childhood games and experiences, including traditional Korean paper crafts and a top-dong competition.
The festival was filled with delicious treats like rice balls, cold cucumber soup, kongguksu, and cotton candy, appealing to all ages.
As the crowd thinned, I enjoyed sweet corn and a bottle of Sikhye, relishing the flavors of Goesan.
Finally, I visited Cheongin Pharmacy, a representative landmark of Chilidan-gil, which operated as a pharmacy from 1955 to 2021.
During the festival, the normally closed pharmacy opened its doors, offering personalized prescription experiences.
The stage events were vibrant, starting with Chilseong folk performances, karaoke with residents, flash mob dance teams, and traditional music performances.
The highlight was the healing musical performance by the team 'Mureob', featuring solo and duet performances over approximately 30 minutes.
Chilidan-gil offers a beautiful flower garden, adorned with murals and seasonal flowers, providing stunning views from spring to autumn.
The festival combined exhibitions and experiences, showcasing woodworking projects from the Urban Sketch and Chilseong Woodworking Studio.
The Chilseong Byeolbyeol Rakjang Festival is a journey of memories and emotions in Goesan's hot spot, Chilidan-gil.
Although the festival has concluded, Chilidan-gil remains vibrant with its historic zelkova tree, Cheongin Pharmacy, and various young entrepreneurs' shops, making it a great place to explore alongside nearby attractions like Sanmaki Old Road and Ssangok Valley.
