Exploring Sangdangsan Fortress: A Healing Destination

Sangdangsan Fortress, with its historic atmosphere, open views, and expansive lawns, is a beloved spot for the citizens of Cheongju and a perfect destination for healing journeys.
This fortress has its roots in the Baekje period and is currently a stone fortress completed during the reign of King Sukjong of the Joseon Dynasty.
The fortress trail stretches approximately 4 km with a gentle slope, making it accessible for everyone to enjoy a leisurely walk.
I visited on a Sunday afternoon.
Under the warm sunshine, many visitors spread out mats or set up tents on the grassy areas, enjoying their time leisurely.
Some couples brought romantic umbrellas and camping chairs, engaging in delightful conversations outdoors.
It felt like a picnic, as visitors could bring delicious snacks and meals to enjoy.
Children were flying kites and toy airplanes, while others played badminton or blew bubbles, creating a peaceful atmosphere reminiscent of scenes from a movie.
Walking from the South Gate to the East Gate and back takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
I took a side path from the grassy area at the South Gate to reach it.
The view of the grassy square from above was incredibly peaceful, and the sound of birds chirping calmed my heart.
I was pleasantly surprised to encounter a baby squirrel that played on the ground for a while without running away.
In May, Sangdangsan Fortress is filled with a fresh green excitement, where the weight of history and the softness of nature coexist. It’s a great place to enjoy the beauty of slowing down with loved ones.
Many visitors were comfortably lying on their mats, taking naps and enjoying their time.
A day at Sangdangsan Fortress offers a refreshing break from our daily lives, providing a healing experience that replenishes our energy.
Next to the South Gate parking lot, there are restrooms and a café & market where you can enjoy various snacks, including Han River ramen, tea, and coffee.
Although I couldn’t use the restaurants or cafés due to an evening appointment, there are charming cafés nearby, like Cafe The Fortress and Cupnut, where you can enjoy a relaxing coffee time after your picnic.
If you wish to experience a comfortable healing time in the fresh nature of May, why not head to Sangdangsan Fortress, famous as a picnic paradise in Cheongju?
