A Journey Through Iron and Tradition in Eumseong

We introduce a special journey where you can experience the powerful story of 'iron,' which has driven human civilization, and the refined atmosphere of 'traditional houses' from the Joseon Dynasty all at once. Gamgok-myeon in Eumseong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, is an attractive region where modern industrial heritage coexists with traditional architectural aesthetics. In particular, the Iron Museum is hosting a rich program under the theme 'A Museum Connecting a Divided World' in celebration of 'Museum and Art Week' in May 2026.
As the only specialized iron museum in Korea, the Iron Museum is a complex cultural space that encompasses the entire process from the birth of iron to its artistic sublimation.
The museum's greatest charm lies in its vast space where nature and industrial heritage harmoniously blend. Upon entering the museum, the first thing that catches your eye is the outdoor exhibition area. Here, you can see massive industrial facilities such as a large electric furnace and ladles that were used in actual steelmaking processes, proudly displayed.
The main exhibition hall is divided into themes: 'The Birth of Iron,' 'The Use of Iron,' and 'Iron and Art.' Visitors can explore the history of iron along a systematic path, from the restoration of ancient smelting techniques to modern high-tech steel products. The exhibited artifacts include traditional iron tools, weapons, and agricultural implements, as well as sculptures by contemporary artists using iron, transforming the cold material into warm artistic expressions.
The highlight of the Museum Week in May is undoubtedly the special project 'Museum×Meet.' As seen in the photographic materials, the Iron Museum is listed as a participating institution representing the Daejeon, Gangwon, and Chungcheong regions. This program selects particularly historically and culturally significant artifacts from the museum's collection and conveys their special stories to visitors.
Visitors can enjoy the pleasure of discovering hidden stories throughout the exhibition halls and can collect 'Meet Trading Cards' containing illustrations and information about the selected artifacts after their visit. This event, running from May 1 to May 31, is generating excitement among visitors eager to collect the limited-edition cards.
If you experience the strength of iron at the Iron Museum, you can enjoy the warmth and tranquility of wooden architecture at the nearby Gongsanjeong Traditional House (Seohije House). This traditional house is an important folk cultural heritage that well preserves the characteristics of a nobleman's house from the central region during the late Joseon period.
The curves of the tiled roof and the neatly arranged main and guest houses visible over the low wall create a calming effect. Strolling through the courtyard and observing the wisdom of ancestors and architectural aesthetics offers a different kind of profound resonance compared to the history of iron.
Experiencing the solidity of iron and the softness of the traditional house amidst the green foliage of May is truly special. In particular, the diverse participatory events held during Museum Week transform visitors from mere observers into active cultural participants.
We recommend embarking on this special cultural walk in Eumseong, Chungbuk this weekend, filled with unforgettable memories and knowledge.
