Exciting New Coastal Attractions in Gangwon-do

If you're considering a vacation destination this summer, look no further than the northern coastal region of Yeongdong, Gangwon-do. A massive budget of 48.4 billion won has been invested in a large-scale marine tourism district, which has finally completed its long construction phase and is set to open.
In June, ahead of its official opening in July, early visitors can catch a glimpse of the atmosphere, leading to a competitive race among eager travelers. This destination offers the perfect blend of thrilling activities and relaxing spaces, making it an ideal outing.
The main attraction of this project is a colossal marine pedestrian bridge connecting the sandy beach and an uninhabited island. Walking along the 631-meter-long bridge, visitors may feel as if they are standing right in the middle of the horizon.
What stands out is the thoughtful design accommodating those with mobility challenges. The initial 80-meter section features a smooth universal deck, allowing strollers and wheelchairs to enjoy the refreshing sea breeze without any obstacles.
At the midpoint of the bridge, a 151-meter transparent glass skywalk provides an exhilarating experience before reaching the secret island, Jukdo, known for its pristine natural environment recognized by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
This year, for the first time, a 263-meter internal exploration trail on the island has opened, allowing visitors to appreciate both unique rock formations and lush bamboo forests. This hidden gem is perfect for quietly reflecting away from the crowds while capturing beautiful life moments.
No need to worry about the weather with the three-story marine center featuring an indoor surfing facility and a 5.3-meter diving pool. The center offers a vast array of activities. On the second floor, thrill-seekers can find a 9.8-meter high diving zone, while the third floor is designed as an adventure zone for kids and a cozy healing café.
If you want to avoid the busy peak season in July, consider visiting during the trial operation period in June when the facilities are being finalized. The exact usage fees will be announced later, so be sure to check before you go.
Once you've enjoyed the new landmark, consider heading to the tranquil Songjiho Lake or Hwajinpo, both just a short drive away. This way, you can experience both the dynamic ocean and the serene lake scenery in a perfect half-day drive through Gangwon-do.
