Exploring Gwanghyeon Cathedral: A Hidden Gem in Jincheon

Situated on a small hill in Gwanghyeon-myeon, Jincheon-gun, Gwanghyeon Cathedral is notable for its striking red brick exterior.
Although it's not far from the center of Gwanghyeon, the path leading up to the cathedral offers a serene landscape harmonized with the surrounding trees. Beyond its religious significance, Gwanghyeon Cathedral serves as a perfect spot for travelers to pause and appreciate both the architecture and its scenic surroundings.

Location: 15-28 Silwon-gil, Gwanghyeon-myeon, Jincheon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do
Parking: Available in front of the cathedral
Visitor Note: It is advisable to maintain silence during mass and religious events.
Gwanghyeon Cathedral began as a chapel in 1962 and was established as a parish in 1996. The current building was constructed in 2000 and has been a cherished space for the local community.
Upon arrival, the first thing that catches the eye is the red brick building. Its warm exterior and sloped roof blend seamlessly with the lush greenery around it. A statue of Jesus with outstretched arms and a cross atop the roof makes it easy to spot the cathedral from a distance, and its modest size complements the landscape beautifully.
Next to the cathedral stands a statue of the Virgin Mary with her hands clasped, surrounded by various trees, including pines. On cool days, it's delightful to take a leisurely stroll around the cathedral.
Inside, the high ceiling and rounded arches create an inviting atmosphere. The interior, featuring red bricks and dark wood, offers a calming ambiance distinct from the exterior. Natural light streaming through the side windows adds warmth to the space.
Notably, the hiking trail to Deoksung Mountain begins right next to the cathedral. During my visit, I noticed several hikers preparing for their ascent or returning from the mountain. The ample parking space in front of the cathedral makes visiting convenient.
From the hilltop, visitors can enjoy views of the Gwanghyeon area. Close to the cathedral, one can appreciate the brick facade and landscaping, while a little farther away, the entire structure framed by trees makes for a great photo opportunity.
Although Gwanghyeon Cathedral is not a famous tourist spot, it is an excellent place to experience the tranquil atmosphere of Gwanghyeon. Including it in your itinerary alongside nearby attractions can reveal another side of Gwanghyeon.
With its harmonious blend of red brick architecture and surrounding greenery, Gwanghyeon Cathedral is a must-visit for those seeking a peaceful spot during their travels.
