Must-Visit Places in Goesan County

Goesan Chilchungsa and Pisejeong, located in Gwangdeok-ri, Mungwang-myeon, Goesan-gun, are significant cultural heritage sites that embody the history of individuals who upheld their integrity for the nation, ethnicity, and personal principles across different eras.

Chilchungsa, elegantly set against a backdrop of green forests and vibrant red maple trees, is a shrine dedicated to the seven loyal subjects of the Sunheung An clan, who sacrificed their lives or upheld their integrity during the crises of the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties.

This shrine, built in 1975, houses the spirit tablets of loyal subjects such as Jo Sin-gwang, Jo Jong-gyeong, Jo Bok-yang, Jo Gi-nam, and Jo Heon, as recorded in the Goesan Samgangnok.

Below the shrine, the Chilchunggak hall safely protects the plaques commemorating the seven loyal subjects, presenting a majestic atmosphere with its red pillars and yellow walls adorned with colorful decorations.

The hall features a prominent plaque inscribed with '칠충각 (Chilchunggak)' in Chinese characters, and inside, the plaques line the walls, visually documenting the history of loyalty upheld by the Sunheung An clan.

Next to Chilchungsa stands the Pisejeong monument, which features poems and inscriptions related to Pisejeong, enhancing the cultural landscape of the area.

Pisejeong, proudly situated on a vast green lawn, adds a sense of tranquility and aesthetic integrity to the weighty history of loyalty represented by Chilchungsa.

The name Pisejeong, meaning 'to avoid the world,' symbolizes the spirit of scholars who retreated to their hometowns during the tumultuous end of the Goryeo dynasty and the founding of Joseon, adhering to the principle of 'not serving two lords.'

This building, with a hipped roof and open structure, invites the surrounding natural scenery inside, embodying the noble spirit of early Joseon scholars who lived with integrity amidst nature.

As you sit on the railing and gaze ahead, you can feel the clear aspirations of ancient sages who sought to live in harmony with nature, free from the struggles for power in the world.
