June: Month of National Defense and Veterans

Enjoy Cultural Tourism
In June, the Month of National Defense and Veterans, we introduce the stories of veterans who dedicated their lives for the Republic of Korea and freedom.
We also provide information on places worth visiting during this month.
What is the Month of National Defense and Veterans?
June commemorates significant events such as Memorial Day and the Korean War, including the 6.25 War and the 2nd Yeonpyeong Battle, which all occurred in June, designated by the Ministry of Veterans Affairs.
As we observe the Month of National Defense and Veterans, let us remember those who sacrificed for our nation.
Veterans were not heroes from the start. They were students, children, and friends. What drove them to the front lines was the belief that "someone must protect us." The peace we enjoy today is thanks to the sacrifices of both the names we remember and many others we cannot.
Let us honor the bravery and sacrifice of those like Lieutenant Seo Hong-seon, who commanded his unit during the Battle of Yanggu in February 1952, and Major Roh Kyung-eok, who fought valiantly during the outbreak of the Korean War.
We also remember the heroes from the United Nations forces who fought alongside us, such as Colonel Marinus den Ouden from the Netherlands and Colonel Monclar from France, who prioritized their mission over rank.
Despite their different nationalities, ranks, and backgrounds, they shared a common belief: "Someone must protect us." Today, we live on the freedom and peace they secured for us.
