As we welcome the refreshing early summer of June, Gyeyuk Mountain in Daedeok-gu, Daejeon, offers a perfect getaway for families and couples looking for a clean healing spot. This unique mountain range, shaped like a chicken's foot, is a beloved wellness destination for hikers and visitors from all over the country.
Unlike the rough hiking trails of the past, the current trail features a premium barefoot walking path that anyone, young or old, can enjoy without straining their knees. The 10km segment is particularly ideal for a weekend day trip, providing an invigorating journey through lush forest paths and the soft touch of moist clay.
One of the biggest advantages of Gyeyuk Mountain is that both entrance and parking are completely free. This makes it an excellent choice for families looking for budget-friendly travel options. However, during peak weekends and holidays in June, parking can become crowded early in the morning. To secure a comfortable parking spot and pleasant walking experience, it is advisable to arrive early and avoid busy times.
The 10km Yellow Clay Trail is designed to be accessible for everyone, including those with mobility challenges. Recognized as one of Korea's top 100 tourist destinations, this eco-friendly trail offers an incredibly soft and cushy surface underfoot. Instead of steep climbs or stairs, the flat clay path stretches on, making it safe and enjoyable for families with elderly parents or young children.
As you walk barefoot and breathe in the clean phytoncide-rich air certified by the Forest Service, you will experience a soothing release of the stress and fatigue that accumulates in daily life. Just pack a bottle of cool water and a towel to wipe your feet, and you will have a delightful outdoor wellness experience.
Currently, some areas of the historic Gyeyuk Mountain Fortress are under construction, leading to detours on the existing hiking paths. To avoid confusion, continue along the yellow clay trail and choose the detour that ascends towards the ridge at the fork in the path to maintain a safe and uninterrupted journey.
Walking along the gentle dirt paths outside the fortress instead of the steep fortress trail reduces the impact on your knees while allowing you to enjoy the refreshing city view from the summit. The sounds of birds and the gentle breeze enhance the trekking experience, making it engaging and enjoyable.
After navigating the detour and reaching the true summit of Gyeyuk Mountain at an elevation of 423.8m, take a photo to commemorate your achievement at the summit stone. Then, relax at the octagonal pavilion, Bonghwangjeong, which offers stunning views of Daejeon city and the beautiful Daecheong Lake.
Experiencing the cool breeze at the observation pavilion is one of the most exhilarating moments of your hike. The majestic energy of the mountain will elevate your sense of accomplishment from the long walk.
