Discovering the Healing Path of Sogrisan Sejo Trail

Before the peak of summer heat arrives, it's the perfect season to seek the cool shade of trees and the refreshing sounds of water. A hidden gem in Boeun, Chungbuk, is capturing the attention of weekend visitors looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse themselves in nature.
True to its name, which means 'mountain away from the mundane world,' the lush pine forest emits a fresh scent of phytoncides, harmonizing with the clear valley waters to offer an unparalleled healing environment. With its grand historical narrative and UNESCO World Heritage status, it stands out as one of the best wellness spots in June.
The Sogrisan Sejo Trail, located in Sogrisan-myeon, Boeun-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, is a unique path where history and nature intertwine. This trail has been restored to recreate the ancient path walked by King Sejo, the seventh king of the Joseon Dynasty, as he sought healing and solace at Bokcheongam.
The forest path at the beginning of June is adorned with dense leaves, creating a natural canopy that shields visitors from the intense midday sun. The trail is free of charge, allowing everyone to enjoy the gentle comfort that nature provides.
Covering 3.2 km one way and taking about two hours for a round trip, the Sogrisan Sejo Trail begins at Beopjusa Temple and leads to Bokcheongam. Approximately 1.2 km of this route is a flat, stair-free 'barrier-free trail' made of wooden decking, designed for easy access.
The wide and gently sloping path is suitable for families with strollers and those with knee issues, allowing for comfortable walking. As you stroll along the refreshing sounds of the valley stream in June, you may experience a cathartic release from the burnout accumulated in daily life.
Beopjusa Temple, the starting point of the trail, serves as a magnificent turning point and is a historical museum in itself. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the temple houses a dense collection of cultural treasures that embody the exquisite craftsmanship of our ancestors.
Key highlights include the overwhelming grandeur of the 'Palsangjeon,' the only existing five-story wooden pagoda in Korea, the 'Seokyeonji' pond resembling a lotus floating in the clouds, and the 'Ssangsa Stone Lantern' supported by two lions. The serene temple architecture and the green mountains of Sogrisan create a picturesque landscape reminiscent of a beautiful painting.
For a pleasant visit, it is recommended to arrive before 9 AM to secure parking and enjoy an uncrowded trail. The parking lot can get crowded on weekends due to the influx of visitors. The parking fee is around 5,000 KRW for the day.
While the trail is relatively easy, wearing comfortable athletic shoes is essential for the 3.2 km round trip. Take a moment to breathe in the fresh morning air, free from artificial noise, and restore your disrupted biological rhythm.
