Discovering Gallery Prism in Gyeryong City

I was on my way home after visiting Gyeryong City for some errands.
It was a familiar route, but one day, something caught my eye. Beyond a large glass window, colorful paintings hung, giving the impression of a small art gallery.
At first, I thought it was a cozy café, but as I approached, I realized it was none other than a gallery.
This is 'Gallery Prism,' located in Eomsa-myeon, Gyeryong City. I was delighted and amazed to discover such a cultural space in the alleys of Gyeryong City.
Since that day, I naturally pass by the gallery every time I visit Gyeryong, and I have become interested in the changing exhibitions.
Gallery Prism quietly sits in a tranquil residential alley. It doesn’t boast flashy signs or massive buildings, but that makes it feel even more special.
It blends seamlessly into the neighborhood, while the vibrant artworks visible through the glass entice passersby to stop and admire.
Just looking from the outside, one can feel the warmth of the exhibition space.
Anyone visiting for the first time might exclaim, 'Is there such a place in Gyeryong?' In fact, this is known as the first professional art exhibition space in Gyeryong City.
It serves as a cultural space for local residents and a precious stage for artists to showcase their work.
As I observed, I noticed that Gallery Prism changes its exhibitions more frequently than expected. With new exhibitions opening roughly every two weeks, I often find myself excitedly wondering, 'What artworks will be displayed this time?'
This indicates that the space is lively and continuously evolving.
Regular exhibitions of local artists, as well as special and planned exhibitions, are held, allowing residents to enjoy high-quality cultural experiences without traveling far.
It’s not just a space that hangs a few paintings; it feels like a place that constantly creates new stories.
The couple running Gallery Prism, Kim Gi-hyun and Mok Ae-rin, didn’t just create a space to display a few paintings. They wanted to establish a cultural platform where local residents could meet art in their daily lives and where local artists could present their works.
Opened in August 2023, Gallery Prism began with that vision.
Running an independent cultural exhibition space in Gyeryong, where cultural facilities are scarce, is no easy task. However, someone had to take the first step, and that step has led to the creation of Gallery Prism.
The heartfelt dedication of the founders, their affection for the community, and their philosophy towards art are all embedded in Gallery Prism.
The name 'Prism' carries special meaning, symbolizing how light disperses into various colors as it passes through a prism. Similarly, this space aims to share diverse artistic colors with the community.
Each exhibited piece tells the artist's story, and the overall exhibition flows with a central theme. Visitors don't just look at the paintings; they experience the emotions and narratives conveyed through the works.
This made my time exploring the exhibition feel even richer.
Gallery Prism also held a commemorative exhibition featuring local artists, showcasing their unique artistic worlds. Most importantly, it allowed local artists to introduce their works and enabled citizens to experience art up close. It demonstrated that high-quality exhibitions are possible even outside major urban art museums.
It was heartwarming to realize that contemporary art could be discussed in Gyeryong as well.
Exhibitions like 'MOA MOA' have been organized to introduce various artworks to citizens, making art more approachable. Especially for novice collectors, the exhibitions were prepared to allow them to acquire artworks without pressure.
Art is not just the privilege of a select few; it is an emotional asset that anyone can enjoy in their lives. This philosophy resonated with me deeply.
Art can change the atmosphere of a home, uplift one’s mood for the day, and transform life’s scenery.
These days, we lead busy lives, often feeling more mentally exhausted than physically. In such times, Gallery Prism serves as a perfect space to pause and recharge.
Gazing at a painting in the quiet exhibition hall helps to organize tangled thoughts. Focusing on the colors and stories within the artworks lightens the heart.
The power of art is greater than one might think. That’s why I want to emphasize that Gallery Prism is not just an exhibition space; it’s a place to rest the soul.
It’s a wonderful thing to have such a cultural space close to home. I hope more people come to know that such a place exists in Gyeryong.
I recommend visiting without hesitation, as admission is free. When you need a small pause in your daily life or seek the warm comfort that art provides, take your time to appreciate the works at Gallery Prism. You might just encounter your own colors and stories there.
