Discover the Hidden Forest Trails of Donggureung

As summer approaches, if you're seeking a special place to soothe your weary heart, look no further than the enchanting forest trails of Donggureung. Located not far from the city, this secretive forest exudes the charm of deep nature, preserved over centuries.
This location is particularly rare, as it opens only during the limited seasons of spring and autumn. Thanks to the fresh air and the shade provided by the dense trees, many visitors are drawn here for weekend strolls with family or loved ones.
Donggureung, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a monumental place where the tombs of kings and queens from the early Joseon Dynasty are located, starting with the tomb of King Taejo, the founder of Joseon. Spanning an impressive 590,000 pyeong, it boasts nine tombs, making it the largest royal tomb complex in the country.
Recognized for its historical and cultural significance, it has been designated as Historic Site No. 193 and proudly listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. The ecosystem has been well-preserved over the years, offering visitors a feeling akin to entering a vast natural forest rather than merely exploring historical ruins.
The forest trails of Donggureung are open for just six weeks until June, and missing this opportunity means waiting until autumn. The trails, totaling 2.7 km, include a 1,400m stretch between Huireung and Wonreung, and a 1,319m section connecting Gyeongneung to the nature study center. The dense forest provides ample shade from the midday sun, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely walk.
For just 1,000 KRW, visitors aged 25 to 64 can enjoy this historical site, while those under 24 or over 65 can enter for free, making it a fantastic option for families. Regular admission begins at 6 AM, but the limited forest trails are only open from 9 AM to 5 PM, with last entry at 4 PM. It's advisable to arrive early to fully enjoy your visit. Additionally, to maintain a pleasant ecological environment, pets and outside food are strictly prohibited.
With the opening of Subway Line 8, access to Donggureung has improved significantly. Visitors can reach the entrance by walking approximately 700 meters from Exit 3 of Donggureung Station. For those driving, affordable parking is available at a rate of 500 KRW for the first 10 minutes and 200 KRW for each additional 10 minutes.
After enjoying the forest trails, consider combining your visit to Donggureung with a trip to the nearby Jangja Lake Park. Relax by the serene lake and explore the surrounding cafes and eateries for a perfect day out.
