When you want to take a break while driving on the West Coast Expressway,

the Haengdamdo Rest Area naturally comes to mind.

Located in Dangjin, Chungcheongnam-do,

it is accessible from both Seoul and Mokpo directions.

With its large scale, it’s great for meals, snacks, shopping, and vehicle maintenance all in one place.

Upon arriving at Haengdamdo Rest Area,

you'll first notice the spacious parking lot and the large main building.

As an island passed by the Seohae Bridge,

the surrounding scenery is quite different from typical inland rest areas.

On clear days, the sea and bridge stretch out beautifully,

and during sunset, the soft sky colors make for great photo opportunities.

There are also ample electric vehicle charging stations,

allowing multiple cars to charge at once,

making it convenient to recharge during long drives.

Please check the charging app for real-time availability before your visit.

Haengdamdo Rest Area even has a hydrogen charging station,

which is still rare among rest areas nationwide.

For hydrogen vehicle drivers, being able to charge during long trips on the expressway is quite reassuring.

The gourmet bridge food court features familiar rest area dishes like

soup, udon, and pork cutlet, as well as various franchise restaurants,

making it easy to choose according to your taste!

You’ll also find snacks like walnut cakes, hot bars, rice cake skewers, and fruit jellies.

There are cafes and convenience stores where you can buy coffee or drinks,

allowing you to quickly grab what you need before driving.

With its large size, the rest area is well-equipped with facilities.

You can find restrooms, convenience stores, ATMs,

baby care rooms, and pharmacies.

This is especially welcome if you suddenly need medicine or need to take a break with a child.

The smoking area at Haengdamdo is notably spacious,

making it quite impressive compared to other rest areas.

Alongside the rest area,

there is also a Moda Outlet.

On the second floor of the main building,

you can browse clothing, workwear, and tools,

while the main outlet store is located towards the Haengdam IC.

The entry routes to the two areas are not the same,

so it might be a bit confusing for first-time visitors.

Outdoors, brand clothing is sold at discounts of up to 80%!

If shopping is your main purpose,

it’s more convenient to set your navigation to the Moda Outlet Haengdam branch.

If you’re just stopping by the rest area,

check the building’s signage before moving around.

The operating hours of the outlet and individual brand stores

may differ from those of the rest area,

so if you visit late, be sure to check in advance.

At the Sinpyeong Agricultural Cooperative Local Food Happy Market,

you can browse food products from the Dangjin and Chungnam regions,

making it a great stop for simple travel souvenirs or snacks.

One of the highlights of Haengdamdo Rest Area is the opportunity

to encounter various local specialties up close.

While exploring the rest area,

you can also find a large sculpture called the 'Gate of Millennium.'

Created to commemorate the completion of the Seohae Bridge,

it measures 28m in width, 15m in height, and 5m in depth,

drawing immediate attention.

Made of granite, stainless steel, and stained glass,

it was created by sculptor Ha Do-hong.

It symbolizes the connection of regions divided by the sea

and the beginning of the 21st-century West Coast era.

The lines on the pillars and floor capture the image of the expressway,

while the vibrant stained glass represents the appearance of the Seohae Bridge.

The upper red circular glass symbolizes the eternally shining sun.

It was quite interesting to find a piece of art with such meaning inside the rest area,

and after reading the description, I noticed the intricate details better.

Though visitors from Seoul and Mokpo use the same main building,

the parking areas are divided by direction.

Even with a relatively spacious parking lot,

weekend afternoons, holidays, and summer vacation periods can see a rush of vehicles from the entrance.

If you want to relax more comfortably,

it’s best to avoid busy times around meal hours.

If you’re planning a trip to Dangjin or a drive along the West Coast,

I recommend allowing extra time to stay at Haengdamdo Rest Area.
