A Safe Haven for Vulnerable Youth

Dreamdarak, which translates to 'a loft where dreams grow,' is a specialized welfare facility that protects at-risk youth exposed to dangers such as family breakdown, running away, and violence.
As children, we all dreamt of having our own secret spaces, places like a loft where we could escape the eyes of adults and fill our imaginations.
However, for some children, that loft is not just a playground but a vital space where they must hide from a cold world.
Recently, I visited the Dreamdarak shelter for girls in Dangjin City. This facility serves as a 24-hour sanctuary for youth who have faced conflicts or violence at home, providing a safe haven for those who find themselves on the streets.
The shelter is located in a standalone villa, offering a secure environment for girls aged 9 to 24 who are experiencing crises such as running away, abuse, or delinquency.
The facility provides comprehensive support, from basic needs like food and clothing to cultural experiences twice a month, along with counseling services to address their challenges.
The counseling room, sleeping quarters, activity room, laundry, and restrooms are all well-maintained. There are both four-person and two-person rooms, each with its own restroom.
During my conversation with the shelter director, I realized that Dreamdarak is more than just a place to eat and sleep; it is a space for growth where children can regain the strength to re-enter the world.
The staff fulfill various roles, sometimes acting as parents, friends, or older sisters. They provide professional psychological counseling, nurture the children's wounds, and offer tailored services to support their education and independence.
The shelter offers short-term stays for up to three months, with the possibility of extending for two additional periods, allowing a maximum stay of nine months.
I discovered a book titled 'I Will Cross the World to You' on the shelter's bookshelf. It tells the story of two protagonists living in different times who heal their wounds through miraculous letters, ultimately realizing true love. Just like the book, the teachers at Dreamdarak help the children heal and move forward.
During the day, five staff members are present, and two are available at night to assist the children. There is also a dedicated cook.
The environment feels warm and inviting, as the staff checks in on the children like sending a letter, preparing warm meals, and being a friend who listens to their concerns.
The facility is open 24/7, all year round, with a capacity of nine residents. Since its opening in October 2023, it has served over 23,000 individuals. The shelter is available to youth regardless of their residency in Dangjin.
Rooms 201 and 202 are cozy and safe, allowing for dreams of any kind, serving as a healing space for the wounded wings of youth in Dangjin.
It is crucial to maintain continuous interest and support for this sanctuary, so that struggling youth can soar higher and further.
