A Refreshing Summer Escape at Dangjin Sports Complex

As summer approaches, the first thing that comes to mind is a space with water. If there is a place nearby where you can spend a cool half-day with your child without traveling far to a valley or the sea, there’s no better preparation for summer.
The Dangjin Sports Complex is a representative sports facility in Dangjin, equipped with a soccer field and an athletics track. It is also the home stadium for the Dangjin Citizen Football Club and hosts major events like the Chungcheongnam-do Sports Festival.
Within its spacious grounds, a community sports park is also established, providing an open space for citizens to stroll and for children to play on weekdays when no events are scheduled.
The biggest reason to visit the Dangjin Sports Complex in summer is the water play area located within the community sports park. The play facilities are themed around the sea, with shallow water play areas surrounding a central structure.
One notable feature is a large multi-play structure designed with a lifeguard theme. At the top of the structure, there is a big water bucket that pours down water, with slides and a net play area below. The body is designed in the shape of a boat, adorned with lifebuoys and anchors, allowing children to feel like little marine rescuers.
The ground is painted in colors resembling blue waves and sandy beaches, so even when the water isn’t splashing, you can still enjoy a cool beach atmosphere. Yellow large umbrellas and shaded areas are set up throughout, providing spots for guardians to relax while watching their children.
The water play area at the Dangjin Sports Complex operates as follows:
Operating Period: July 11, 2026 (Saturday) - August 17, 2026 (Monday)
Closed: Every Wednesday and during rain
Session Times:
1st Session: 10:00 AM - 10:45 AM
2nd Session: 11:00 AM - 11:45 AM
3rd Session: 1:00 PM - 1:45 PM
4th Session: 2:00 PM - 2:45 PM
5th Session: 3:00 PM - 3:45 PM
6th Session: 4:00 PM - 4:45 PM
Each session lasts for 45 minutes, and there is a break for lunch (11:45 AM - 1:00 PM) after the morning sessions. It’s best to use this time to feed your child and take a break in the shade before returning for the afternoon sessions.
Since it operates on a session basis, it’s advisable to check the schedule in advance. For detailed usage methods, reservations, and what to bring, please refer to the Dangjin Urban Corporation’s guidelines.
To enjoy the water play area all day with your child, first, visit during the first morning session. The time right after opening at 10 AM has the fewest people and the cleanest water. It’s also easier to avoid the scorching summer sun in the morning.
Secondly, it’s important to secure a shaded spot early. Although umbrellas and shade structures are provided, popular spots fill up quickly. Upon arrival, it’s reassuring to set up your mat before getting your child ready for water play.
Thirdly, bringing a change of clothes, dry towels, and aqua shoes is essential. Packing a thin waterproof blanket, a tube, and sunscreen will make your half-day much more relaxed. Instead of moving directly after water play with a wet child, plan to dry off in the nearby shade while having a snack.
Lastly, avoid Wednesdays and rainy days. The facility is closed every Wednesday and during rain, so it's important to check the weather and day of the week to avoid unnecessary trips.
The advantage of the Dangjin Sports Complex is that it offers more than just water play. There are attractions for family members who do not wish to enter the water, all within the same area. Next to the water play area, there is a spacious outdoor basketball court. However, please note that the basketball court and inline skating cannot be used while the water play area is in operation.
During other times, red mushroom-shaped shade structures and large yellow umbrella canopies are installed near the court, allowing for enjoyable exercise in the shade even at noon. Several movable basketball hoops are available for light shooting practice.
Further in, you’ll find a children's traffic park, decorated with a red suspension bridge, traffic lights, crosswalk paintings, and a 3D video building designed for children’s eye levels. This space allows children to naturally learn about traffic safety through play, providing a different experience from the water play area.
Throughout the park, wooden deck walkways connect, with pine trees, benches, and pavilions available for adults to rest. While children enjoy the water play, guardians can leisurely stroll in the cool shade, making it a perfect way to spend a summer afternoon.
A summer day can create different memories depending on where you spend it. Traveling doesn’t always mean going far; simply watching your child splash water and enjoying that moment in the shade is enough to make for a wonderful day. The water play area at the Dangjin Sports Complex is a place you can comfortably visit even in summer. I recommend adding it to your list of places to visit this summer.
