On September 12, a special event was held in Dangjin to discuss the future of the city.
This was the 'AX Leading City Dangjin' vision declaration ceremony.
With the slogan, 'South Korea's AX Transformation, Dangjin City Will Do It,' Dangjin officially announced its vision to promote changes across safety, industry, and administration through AI Transformation, known as AX.
The declaration ceremony was not merely an introduction of new technologies.
It was meaningful as it provided a space for citizens to reflect on how to change the current urban management methods and what kind of city Dangjin will become in the rapidly changing AI era.
Dangjin has set three main pillars: Safety AX, Industry AX, and Administration AX, and plans to implement seven leading projects, including the AI Integrated Control Center, Intelligent Traffic System, AI Data Center Mega Special Zone, Agriculture and Manufacturing AX, AI Startup Support, and AI Citizen Assistant.
The area that caught my attention the most was 'Safety AX.'
Dangjin plans to establish an AI Integrated Control Center that links weather, river, traffic, and security CCTV data with various sensor information to transition to a safety management system that can detect risk signs and potential accidents in advance.
While the current safety management responds after accidents occur, the goal is to use AI to proactively identify risks and respond accordingly.
From a citizen's perspective, this change seems quite realistic.
If AI can analyze numerous risks we face in our daily lives, such as children commuting to school, seniors crossing the street, or traffic surges during heavy rainfall, the sense of safety experienced by citizens can indeed change.
Through the intelligent traffic system and smart crosswalks, there are plans to enhance the safety of vulnerable road users like children and the elderly, connecting directly to citizens' lives.
Ultimately, what matters is not how much AI is used, but how effectively it can enhance citizens' safety.
Dangjin is an industrial city, and I believe that its AX transformation should not be limited to improving administrative services.
How existing industries connect with new technologies will determine Dangjin's future competitiveness.
With the establishment of the AI Data Center Mega Special Zone, Dangjin presented plans to cultivate professionals and attract related companies by linking AX Industry-University Innovation Parks and AI Convergence Industrial Complexes.
Additionally, the plan is to integrate AI and data into agriculture and manufacturing to enhance productivity and competitiveness, expanding AI utilization across the local economy through support for AI startups and small businesses.
For small businesses, AI can be a useful tool rather than an overwhelming technology.
From creating promotional materials to customer management, sales analysis, online marketing, and content creation, the areas where AI can be utilized are expanding.
If Dangjin City not only advises small businesses to 'utilize AI' but also provides training and hands-on support to ensure they can effectively use it, more practical benefits can be achieved.
Personally, I am most excited about the 'AI Citizen Assistant' policy.
Dangjin plans to establish an AI Citizen Assistant that proactively guides citizens on administrative services tailored to their life stages and situations, such as childbirth, childcare, education, employment, and retirement.
Currently, citizens often have to search for available support programs themselves, visit relevant departments, or make inquiries to access policies.
Even with good policies in place, some may miss the opportunity to apply simply because they are unaware of them.
If the AI Citizen Assistant operates effectively, it can reduce such inconveniences.
For example, it could inform a new parent about available support policies, guide young people preparing for employment to relevant programs, and notify seniors of necessary welfare services.
This represents a shift towards administrative services that come to citizens.
However, it is essential to consider that only those who are proficient in digital technology should not be the only ones benefiting from these policies.
Seniors or digitally vulnerable groups who are not familiar with AI should not be excluded, and existing offline administrative services and human consultations must be maintained.
AI should not replace humans but rather be a means to help people provide more human-centered administration.
AI technology is rapidly advancing, but ultimately, people must be at the heart of the city.
Dangjin is not only a rapidly growing industrial city but also a living city where families raising children, youth, seniors, farmers, and small business owners coexist.
Therefore, Dangjin's AX should not be a transformation exclusive to specific industries or tech companies but rather a city transition where all citizens can feel changes in their daily lives.
The vision declaration ceremony is just the beginning.
Moving forward, what matters more than how well Dangjin builds AI is how wisely it utilizes that technology for its citizens.
Beyond being a 'city that uses AI well,' I hope for Dangjin to become a 'city that better cares for its citizens through AI.'
As a citizen, I will support the AX Leading City declaration to not remain a grand promise for the future but to lead to small yet certain changes that today's Dangjin citizens can feel.
The drone show that adorned the night sky was a visual representation of the vision for 'Future City Dangjin.'
The sight of numerous drones creating a single picture and message in the sky resembled the concept of AX, where data and technology connect to produce a unified result.
Just as multiple drones connect to create a scene that cannot be completed with just one, urban change cannot be achieved through the efforts of a single field.
When administration, businesses, citizens, and local communities connect and fulfill their roles, only then can a change in the entire city occur.
The AX that Dangjin is promoting is no different; it must protect citizens' lives and daily routines in safety, enhance the region's competitiveness in industry, and ensure that citizens can access the policies they need more easily and quickly in administration.
On that day, the stage featured a magic show and musical performances.
The performances of 'Bicycle Riding Scenery' and 'Travel Sketch' brought together generations, allowing citizens to sing and enjoy together.
Incorporating cultural and artistic programs into a policy announcement event not only provides entertainment but also lowers the barriers for citizen participation.
Policies must capture citizens' interest, and to spark that interest, citizens must first feel they can approach them.
No matter how good a policy is, if citizens are unaware of it or find it difficult to engage with, its effectiveness will inevitably be limited.
Conversely, if citizens visit the event with their families, enjoy performances, and naturally encounter discussions about 'Dangjin's future' while watching the drone and fireworks shows, the policies can reach citizens in a more friendly manner.
Every Saturday from 1 PM to 6 PM, the Sinseong University Mobility Department operates a drone experience booth, and participating until October 17 could lead to more meaningful family time.
The fireworks show that concluded the event captivated many citizens.
The future of the city does not only signify dazzling changes like fireworks.
It also means making commutes safer, quickly alerting about sudden disasters or risks, reducing missed opportunities for necessary welfare policies, helping small businesses utilize AI for their operations, and allowing public officials to spend more time contemplating policies for citizens instead of being bogged down by repetitive administrative tasks.
These changes must accumulate for the name 'AX Leading City Dangjin' to have significance in the lives of its citizens.
Beyond being a 'city that uses AI well,' I look forward to Dangjin becoming a 'city that better cares for its citizens through AI.'
And I hope that one day, citizens can gaze at the night sky filled with drones and fireworks and say, 'The future we talked about back then is truly here with us.'
