20th International Small Islands Studies Association World Conference Opens
The 20th International Small Islands Studies Association World Conference (2026 ISISA World Conference) has officially opened on July 7 at the Grand Ballroom of Ramada Hotel in Jaeun Island.
This conference, themed 'Island Space and Time,' will run until July 14 in the Sinan region, gathering island researchers and policy experts from around the world to discuss the future of islands.
The ISISA (International Small Islands Studies Association), established in 1986, is a global network of island research with over 5,000 members from more than 100 countries.
At this conference, a total of 214 academic papers will be presented from 39 countries, with over 400 participants including researchers, policy experts, and representatives from public institutions sharing their findings in various fields.
Key discussion topics will include history, culture, ecology, climate change, tourism, technology, and policy, all related to the sustainable development of islands.
Prior to the opening ceremony, key guests including Kim Tae-sung, the mayor of Sinan County, and ISISA President Lori Brinko, discussed the expansion of international island research cooperation and sustainable island policy directions during a tea meeting.
The opening ceremony featured a series of speeches, including welcoming remarks from Mayor Kim and a congratulatory address from distinguished guests, followed by a celebratory performance.
Following the opening ceremony, there will be keynote speeches from domestic and international scholars, academic sessions, networking events, and field trips to explore the islands of Sinan.
This conference is expected to be a meaningful platform for international exchange, allowing experts from around the world to experience the islands of Sinan and seek sustainable development solutions together.
Sinan, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site with beautiful islands and sustainable development policies, is taking a significant step forward as an international island city through this conference.
