After 20 years, the Chungcheongnam-do Sports Festival is being held in Dangjin!
The festival runs from September 3 to September 6, 2026, featuring athletes from 15 cities and counties in Chungcheongnam-do competing in 30 official sports and 2 demonstration events, totaling 32 competitions.
It has been two decades since the last Chungcheongnam-do Sports Festival took place in Dangjin, and the excitement is palpable as the games unfold at various venues, including the Dangjin Comprehensive Sports Complex.
On September 4, I visited the baseball, kendo, and archery venues to capture the vibrant atmosphere and thrilling moments of the competitions.
01. Baseball Match at the Sapgyoho Lake Park
The first stop was the baseball field at Sapgyoho Lake Park, where I witnessed a match between Haduk Elementary School and Hongseong Elementary School. Contrary to my expectations of a relaxed atmosphere, the excitement from the crowd was intense, with very few empty seats. The cheers grew louder every time a player stepped up to bat, and the focus of the young athletes was impressive.
Watching the elementary school players, I couldn't help but imagine their future potential. Although they are currently playing in school leagues, some may one day shine on larger stages.
Above all, the experience of preparing for the game and participating itself is invaluable for these children. Winning and losing are important, but the lessons learned through practice and competition are what truly matter in sports.
02. Kendo at the Sinpyeong Cultural Sports Center
Next, I headed to the Sinpyeong Cultural Sports Center, where kendo matches were taking place. The atmosphere was charged with tension as young competitors faced off. The discipline and etiquette of kendo were evident, showcasing the importance of mental training alongside physical skill.
03. Archery at the Manggaekjeong Archery Range
Finally, I visited the Manggaekjeong Archery Range. Archery, a traditional Korean sport, involves hitting distant targets with a bow. The distance to the targets was surprising, emphasizing that strength alone is not enough to succeed. The focus and patience required in archery were evident as competitors took their turns, waiting for the right moment to release their arrows.
Throughout the day, I experienced the unique charm of baseball, kendo, and archery. Each sport offered a different atmosphere, yet the dedication of the athletes remained a common thread. Regardless of the outcomes, I wish all competitors the best for their hard work and effort.
