Discover the Refreshing Green Barley Field at Joman River in Gimhae!
Idong 747-6, Gimhae-si, Gyeongsangnam-do
조만강 청보리밭

Spring in Gimhae is defined by the refreshing green waves of the Joman River Green Barley Field (조만강 청보리밭). Spanning over 9,000 pyeong within the Joman River Sports and Ecological Park, this destination offers a peaceful retreat where visitors can immerse themselves in nature’s vibrant colors. The sight of green barley fluttering in the breeze provides a unique healing experience that clears the eyes and refreshes the spirit.
Beyond its beauty, this field carries a meaningful purpose, as the barley harvested in June is donated to support the underprivileged or processed into tea for citizens. With various photo zones, red poppies blooming between the stalks, and a nostalgic retro festival, it is the ultimate spring destination for families, couples, and photography lovers looking for their next 'life shot' profile picture.
Refreshing Green Waves at Joman River Ecological Park
While famous barley fields are often associated with Gochang or Jeju, Gimhae offers its own spectacular version right in the heart of the city. The Joman River Green Barley Field was carefully cultivated starting last October to celebrate the 'Visit Gimhae Year.' This massive 9,000-pyeong area ensures that even with many visitors, the space never feels overcrowded, allowing for a relaxed exploration of the lush landscape.
Well-maintained exploration paths wind through the fields, ensuring that visitors can get close to nature without damaging the crops. Walking through these paths with the blue sky above and green waves below creates a perfect harmony that captures the essence of spring. It is a rare opportunity to see such a large-scale agricultural beauty within an urban ecological park.
Perfect Harmony of Green Barley and Red Poppies
One of the highlights of visiting during May and June is seeing the beautiful contrast between the green barley and the bright red poppies. These poppies are currently blooming sparsely but will soon reach full bloom, creating a stunning visual tapestry. Since the harvest is scheduled for early June, now is the only time to capture this specific color combination.
Throughout the field, you will find various sculptures and photo zones designed to complement the natural background. Taking a photo here guarantees a "picture for your life." The gentle breeze moving through the barley creates a rhythmic sound and motion that adds to the therapeutic atmosphere of the park.
Retro Memories at the Green Barley Festival
To celebrate this beautiful scenery, the city hosts the Green Barley Festival, featuring a retro theme that evokes the nostalgia of the 1960s to 1980s. Even after the official festival dates, the sculptures and scarecrow exhibitions remain in place until the harvest, providing ongoing entertainment for tourists. The festival includes unique experiences like treasure hunts and urban agriculture promotion halls.
For families visiting with children, the festival offers a chance to experience traditional agricultural culture and folk songs. The "mindless zone" and rest areas are perfect for those who want to sit back and enjoy the scenery without distraction. It’s a place where children discover new things and adults reminisce about their own childhood memories.
Visitor Tips for a Comfortable Trip
The Joman River Green Barley Field is an open area with very little shade. If you are planning to visit during the sunny afternoon hours, we highly recommend bringing a parasol, a hat, and a handheld fan to stay cool. A temporary parking lot is typically established near the Idong 747-6 area to accommodate the influx of visitors during peak bloom times.
Remember that the barley will be harvested on June 5th to be used for charitable donations and barley tea. If you miss this window, you will have to wait until next year to see these blue waves again. Make sure to visit soon to witness the meaningful and beautiful transition of spring into summer in Gimhae.
