Paju Public Health Center's Korean Medicine Health Promotion Program

Barefoot Walking to Protect Your Health

Paju Public Health Center is introducing a program prepared with Korean medicine for health promotion, called 'Herbal Medicine Joy (樂)'

It's all about barefoot walking.

The first session was on October 23rd at Hagnyeongsan Urban Natural Park, and the second was on October 30th at Yulgok Cultural Academy. I attended the first session at Hagnyeongsan Urban Natural Park.

After a long time, the rain stopped, the autumn sky was clear, and a gentle breeze made it a great day for barefoot walking.

Among the 20 or so participants, many were new to barefoot walking, but the program proceeded safely and orderly under the guidance of Park Kyung-woon, head of the Paju branch of the Barefoot Walking National Movement Headquarters.

Park Kyung-woon said that he had been suffering from sleep disorders due to constant tension but experienced physical and mental recovery through 'grounding (earthing)' by chance.

After seeing research results that barefoot grounding improves cognitive function and boosts immunity, he became a barefoot walking evangelist to prevent suicide among colleagues suffering from severe stress and depression.

In Korean medicine, the organs are connected to the soles of the feet, so stimulating the soles evenly helps with circulation by stimulating the organs as well as improving sleep.

When the body is filled with free electrons through grounding, free radicals are discharged, and the spring action of the arch (the hollow part of the sole) naturally relieves musculoskeletal pain.

Before barefoot walking, light stretching is essential.

We also meditated according to the 4.4.8 breathing method: inhale through the nose for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, and then exhale slowly through the mouth for 8 seconds.

The 'hurray' with the big toe and toe crawling are amazing, right? It's good for strengthening the intrinsic muscles. It's not easy at first, so increase it little by little.

We shouted 'Fighting!' for health and set off! With the positive energy of wishing each other health and happiness, we also grounded our palms with our partners facing each other! We took a breath and walked slowly in a line along the mountain path, being careful of our feet. A loess path was created for barefoot walking.

There were some steep places in the middle, but everyone reached the top without dropping out.

All the participants said they could feel their bodies and minds getting lighter and fell in love with the charm of barefoot walking.

Barefoot gathering at the summit!

We also did the big toe 'hurray' and made a heart by laying our soles down. Every time I moved my toes, I felt my leg muscles getting stronger. Try it yourself.

Among the participants, there were many who were receiving treatment for illnesses or suffering from insomnia, but they said that they had been helped by walking barefoot steadily.

Seeing their bright expressions and energetic strides, I think I know the effect. Proper diet, positive mind, and laughter are also essential for health.

It took about 30 minutes to complete the Hagnyeongsan course. The feel of the soil on the soles of my feet is so good. There are about 20 barefoot walking paths in Paju. Find a place near you and take a walk.

Some of the paths include:

Unjeong Lake Park Woodmji Trail

Bongseosan Dulleongil Trail

Yulgok Arboretum Acorn Path

Saeam Park Barefoot Walking Path

Wolrong Citizens' Park

Yangjimal Park Barefoot Path

Chorong Barefoot Path

Paju Book City Barefoot Walking Path

Gamaksan Suspension Bridge Road

Gyoha Central Park Barefoot Path

Osan-ri Prayer Mountain

Hagnyeongsan Dulleongil Trail

Munbal Shinbaram Barefoot Path

Hagnyeongsan Dulleongil Trail

Tanhyeon-myeon Green Barley Field

'Barefoot walking' is not just about taking off your shoes and walking, but a way to restore the balance of your body and mind by directly touching nature.

The moment your soles touch the earth, you become one with nature and revive the 'sense of life within you.'

Health Benefits of Barefoot Walking

Promotes blood circulation: Stimulates the soles of the feet, dilating capillaries and promoting circulation.

Strengthens foot muscles: Strengthens the muscles of the soles and ankles, improving balance.

Improves immunity: Research shows that grounding strengthens natural healing power.

Relieves stress: The cold temperature and feel of the ground stabilizes the mind and body.

Meditation effect: You can find peace of mind through meditation while walking.

Communion with nature: It is an experience of regaining the rhythm of nature that you have forgotten in your busy daily life.

Correct Way to Walk Barefoot

Choose a safe place: Use barefoot walking paths safely managed by local governments.

It is good to get a tetanus shot to prevent wound infection.

Start slowly: At first, give your soles and muscles time to adapt for about 10-15 minutes, then gradually increase the time. Light exercise is also necessary before walking.

If your feet are cold or the walking path is rough, it is better to wear shoes with thin insoles or socks instead of going barefoot.

Walk naturally: Don't step heavily from the heel, but land gently with your entire foot.

Focus on breathing: Inhale deeply for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, and then exhale slowly over 8 seconds, feeling the sensation of the soles of your feet.

Finishing: Do light finishing exercises after walking.

Wash your feet thoroughly and keep them warm. If you get a wound, be sure to treat it.

Please remember the precautions

. If you have diabetes or a wound on your foot, consult a specialist first as there is a risk of infection.

. In winter, be careful to keep your upper body warm, and avoid going out when the temperature is too low as there is a risk of frostbite.

. You can injure your feet on stones, wood chips, and glass shards, and you can be bitten by insects or snakes, so walk while watching your feet.

. Don't be greedy! It is good to practice steadily with the amount of exercise that is right for you.

Most of the participants have experience participating in Paju Public Health Center's health programs.

They like it because there are a variety of programs to choose from and they can easily take care of their health in their daily lives without any burden.

Paju Public Health Center employees also participated directly in the event and walked with the citizens.

Because they carefully examine the citizens' reactions and wishes and reflect them in planning the program, a highly satisfactory program can be created.

Paju Public Health Center is conducting resident-led customized health promotion projects so that local residents can become the main agents and directly plan, operate, and evaluate projects to solve community problems on their own.

Paju Public Health Center's integrated health promotion project is a sustainable health culture platform that helps each citizen make healthy choices in their daily lives, and it is the first step in creating a happy Paju community.
