Unique Family Trip to Gyeongju's East Coast

A Unique Family Trip to Gyeongju's East Coast
When you think of 'Gyeongju', historical sites like Bulguksa Temple or Cheomseongdae often come to mind. However, if you're planning a different kind of family trip, heading to Gyeongju's East Coast can be a great option!
Especially in Yangnam, Gyeongju, you can enjoy unique natural landscapes, scientific experiences, and refreshing sea views all in one place, making it an ideal family travel destination.
Let me introduce the course from Yangnam's columnar jointing to the Wolseong Nuclear Power Plant Promotional Center!
Yangnam Columnar Jointing
Location: 405-3 Eupcheolli, Yangnam-myeon, Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do
Free Parking Location: 195-6 Eupcheolli, Yangnam-myeon, Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do
The first place we visited on a summer day was Yangnam's columnar jointing. Walking along the Wave Sound Path by the sea, the cool sound of the waves made the beginning of our trip delightful.
What stood out the most was that the columnar jointing here was quite different from the cliffs you might typically imagine. From the fan-like spread towards the sea to the long, pillar-like rock formations, we could closely observe the unique geological features shaped by nature over time.
Yangnam Columnar Jointing Observatory
Location: 498-13 Donghaean-ro, Yangnam-myeon, Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do
Observatory Hours: Tuesday to Sunday 09:00 - 18:00 (Last entry at 17:00, closed on Mondays)
Admission Fee: Free
If you visit with your child, I recommend stopping by the 'Columnar Jointing Observatory' to learn how these formations were created rather than just passing by as 'pretty rocks'.
Seeing the geological structure formed by the cooling and solidifying of hot lava made me look at the seaside scenery differently. These weren't just stones; they felt like natural sculptures holding the traces of time.
Below the Yangnam Columnar Jointing Observatory, there is a long walking path that allows you to appreciate the columnar jointing up close. Although the sun was strong during midday, the breeze from the sea and the sound of the waves made it a pleasant time for a short stroll.
However, on sunny days, it's advisable to bring hats and water and to walk according to your family's condition rather than overdoing it.
The Yangnam Columnar Jointing has been designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark on the East Coast of Gyeongsangbuk-do, greatly acknowledging its value. Taking a certification photo at the UNESCO markers around the observatory would also be a great idea!

After visiting the Yangnam Columnar Jointing, we moved on to the Wolseong Nuclear Power Plant Promotional Center.
It was fascinating to learn how electricity is generated and where the energy we use comes from during our visit with the kids.
The center features various exhibits and hands-on experiences explaining the principles of nuclear power generation and energy.
The complex topics of nuclear energy and energy consumption are presented in an engaging way, making it less daunting for family visitors.
While exploring the exhibits, we naturally began to think about energy conservation and carbon neutrality. Usually, we take electricity for granted, but after visiting the center, we discussed ways to save energy at home.
It's great that this experience goes beyond just observing exhibits; it opens up conversations about energy in daily life with your child!
If you're pondering where to go with your child, I highly recommend a trip to Yangnam in Gyeongju!
This journey offers not just a chance to see the sea but also an opportunity to explore nature, science, and the environment together.
For children, it's an experience of encountering living nature and science, while for adults, it's a relaxing trip with refreshing coastal views.
From the unique columnar jointing and Wave Sound Path to the Wolseong Nuclear Power Plant Promotional Center, if you're looking for a special course to enjoy with your family, set off for Yangnam, Gyeongju, where nature, science, and relaxation come together!
