The Value of Shade and Carbon Neutrality: A Green Future on Two Wheels

[By Han Je-woo]
As the temperature fluctuates these days,
it's the perfect season to enjoy the gentle breeze,
making you want to go out wearing short-sleeved t-shirts.
On days when the fine dust is not severe,
I like to ride my bicycle and soak in the blue sky.
Now is just the right time to ride a bike before the hot summer arrives.
At the entrance of the Gyeonggi Sunshine Bicycle Path,
I took my folding bike down to Oido Station,
where the subway lines 4 and Suin-Bundang intersect.
While riding along the Sihwa Embankment bicycle road,
I discovered an amazing path.
This bicycle path, unlike most, offers refreshing shade,
thanks to solar panels installed overhead.
The 'Gyeonggi Sunshine Bicycle Path,'
which spans a 0.8km section near Oido in Siheung,
is a renewable energy project utilizing the space above the bike path.
Completed in February of this year,
it serves as a model for Gyeonggi Province's carbon neutrality initiatives.
The design of the solar structures blends harmoniously with nature,
featuring curves that evoke the waves of Sihwa Lake and the flight of seagulls.
Additionally, part of the profits generated from solar energy
will be returned to the community.
The total installed capacity of the solar equipment on the Gyeonggi Sunshine Bicycle Path
is 761.6kW, capable of producing about 1 million kWh of electricity annually.
This is equivalent to the energy consumption of approximately 300 households,
and is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 431 tons annually,
which is comparable to planting 3,500 pine trees.
The presence or absence of shade makes a significant difference
for those enjoying a ride.
After leaving the shaded section,
I found myself back on an exposed bike path,
and I can only imagine how much more pronounced this difference will be
in the hotter summer months.
Along the Gyeonggi Sunshine Bicycle Path,
there are various safety and convenience facilities,
including rest areas, bike racks, air pumps, landscape lighting, and CCTV.
It’s a great spot to cool off for a moment
before heading onto the Sihwa Embankment.
The path is not just for cyclists; there’s also a pedestrian walkway,
allowing for orderly use by both cyclists and walkers.
If you're worried about carrying your bike to Siheung,
consider parking at the Oido Museum,
which offers free bike rentals for up to three hours with an ID.
This gives you plenty of time to explore the Gyeonggi Sunshine Bicycle Path
and other cycling routes in Siheung.
The Gyeonggi Sunshine Bicycle Path not only provides shade
but also contributes to achieving carbon neutrality.
As I rode, I felt a sense of calm,
allowing me to stop and appreciate the scenery.
Here’s hoping for more paths like this in the future,
so that many residents can enjoy pleasant rides along the Gyeonggi Sunshine Bicycle Path.
