Invitation to the Sacred Ground of National Defense: Iksan National Military Museum

June is a month dedicated to honoring those who have devoted themselves to the nation and its people. In recognition of this, we introduce the Iksan National Military Museum, a significant site where visitors can vividly explore the steadfast legacy and military history of the Republic of Korea Army.
Located within the Army Non-Commissioned Officer Academy, the National Military Museum was previously accessible only by reservation, limiting public access. However, since the second half of 2025, the museum has opened its doors to citizens, allowing anyone to visit freely.
◆ Operating Hours
- 09:00 - 18:00
- Tuesday to Saturday: 09:00 – 18:00 (Free)
- Closed on Sundays and Mondays
※ Group visitors must make a reservation in advance.
As the museum is located within a military security zone, entry procedures are essential. Visitors must check in at the information desk located at the main gate, where they will verify their identity and fill out necessary information accurately. Please ensure to bring your ID when planning your visit.
On the first floor, the exhibition space is divided into two main themes: the 'History of Non-Commissioned Officers' and the 'Korean War Exhibition'. Begin your tour at the History of Non-Commissioned Officers, located on the left side of the first floor.
Upon entering, visitors are greeted by the striking phrase 'The Core of Military Combat Power', which captures attention. This area systematically explains the long history and traditions of non-commissioned officers who have quietly played a crucial role in national security.
While military rank systems are often viewed as a modern concept, historical documents reveal their roots in our past, with similar roles and ranks existing during the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties.
These traditional military rank systems evolved into a modern military framework during the Korean Empire and were established in their current form after liberation.
At the center of the exhibition is the area dedicated to the 'Myth of the Ten Soldiers', a symbol of noble sacrifice in the history of the Korean Army. This space highlights the operational circumstances and the dedication of soldiers during the Songaksan battle on May 4, 1949, just a year before the Korean War.
Ten soldiers, including Sergeant Seo Bu-deok, volunteered for a special mission and bravely attacked enemy strongholds, fulfilling their duty at the cost of their lives. Their heroic actions enabled the successful recapture of lost positions.
The exhibition includes records of the Uljin Medal of Valor awarded to each soldier and documents that objectively recount the tense military situation of that time.
Additionally, a vast archive of materials related to non-commissioned officers is displayed, showcasing military uniforms, rank insignia, and various medals awarded through different eras.
Moving on, the next corner details significant operations and achievements involving non-commissioned officers, from anti-communist infiltration missions to deployments in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Iraq.
The museum serves as a valuable educational space to remember forgotten histories and reflect on the sacrifices made for national security. We encourage you to visit the Iksan National Military Museum this June, a month dedicated to honoring those who have served.
