Hiking in Gwanaksan: A Beginner's Guide

Seoul Trip
Beginner Hiking Course at Gwanaksan
Recently on a popular show, it was mentioned that those who lack fire and wood elements in their fortune can gain energy from hiking Gwanaksan.
So, I decided to restart my spring hiking journey!
This time, I chose a short beginner course starting from Sadang Station to Seonyucheon National Flag Peak!
Gwanaksan Seonyucheon National Flag Peak Course:
- Route: Exit 4 of Sadang Station - Gwanumsan Temple - Seonyucheon National Flag Peak
- Distance: Approximately 4.7 km
- Duration: Round trip about 1 hour 50 minutes
I took my time, so it took about 1 hour and 50 minutes from Sadang Station.
It’s not a difficult course, but since Gwanaksan is rocky, good hiking shoes are essential! I recommend bringing hiking gloves!
To start, exit through Exit 4 of Sadang Station, where you will see many hikers already dressed in hiking gear, so you won’t have trouble finding the way.
Continue straight, and you will come across a must-visit kimbap restaurant called Rodeo Kimbap. Turn right here.
The trail is well-marked with signs for the Seoul Circular Trail, so you won’t get lost until you reach the middle.
At the entrance of Gwanumsan Temple, there is a clean restroom, so make sure to stop by before you start hiking!
As you approach Gwanumsan Temple, take a moment to make a wish for the year ahead before returning to the hike.
Head towards the left stone steps! Follow the signs for the Seoul Circular Trail (Gwanaksan Park Entrance) or Yeonjudae to reach your destination.
As you ascend, you will reach a point where you can see the entire city of Seoul!
On a clear day, you can see both Namsan Tower and Lotte Tower in Jamsil!
If you continue a bit further, you will reach a rest area. From here, head towards the National Flag Peak.
The path descends slightly, and it may feel a bit rough compared to the previous trail, but just keep going!
After another rest area, you will see a signpost again! You’re almost there—head towards Seonyucheon National Flag Peak!
From here, the trail becomes rocky, which might be intimidating. However, you can take a safer route along the right side.
It's recommended to wear gloves as you will need to hold onto the rocks while climbing down.
Keep going along the right path, and you will soon see the National Flag Peak!
From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire city of Seoul!
This route is shorter and less crowded than the one from Seoul National University, allowing for free photo opportunities without waiting.
After a short break, it’s time to return. Remember, descending requires more caution than ascending.
As the weather warms up, more hikers will likely appear!
