Celebrating the Spirit of Independence: March 1st Movement in Daegu

Every year on March 1st, we commemorate a significant national holiday, the March 1st Movement Day, in which the Korean people protested against Japanese colonial rule and declared their desire for independence to the world.
This year marks the 107th anniversary of the March 1st Movement, and we would like to introduce a special destination in the heart of Daegu where you can honor the noble spirit of that day.
In the spring of 1919, the passionate voices of Daegu students echoed in the streets, notably along the 3.1 Movement Path.
Walking along this path, lined with the waves of the Korean flag, is a meaningful journey. Shall we take a walk together?
3.1 Movement Path
Located at 881-3 Dongsan-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu, this path features 90 steps leading from Cheongra Hill to Gyesan Cathedral.
This path was once a secret route filled with the fervent hearts of Daegu students in March 1919.
Students from Kyeseong School and Sinmyeong School had to evade the watchful eyes of the Japanese police as they made their way to the main gathering point for the movement, Seomun Market.
Thus, they chose this 90-step path descending from Cheongra Hill toward Gyesan Cathedral.
This area, once a dense pine forest ideal for hiding, is now designated as the 3.1 Movement Path. Take a moment to stroll and admire the photographs of Daegu's modern history displayed on the walls.
Cheongra Hill
Located at 2029 Dalgubeol-daero, Jung-gu, Daegu, Cheongra Hill is known for its exotic missionary houses.
The romantic atmosphere created by the lush green ivy makes it a popular photo spot in Daegu.
However, this beautiful hill is also a historical site where students involved in the 3.1 Movement gathered in secret to prepare for the protests.
We recommend walking here while reflecting on the determined spirit of those students.
Gyesan Cathedral
Located at 10 Seoseong-ro, Jung-gu, Daegu, two towering bell towers capture attention as you descend the 3.1 Movement stairs.
This is Gyesan Cathedral, the first Western-style building in Daegu, with over a century of history.
The intricate harmony of Gothic architecture and red and gray bricks stands out, making it a symbolic space that has witnessed the waves of the March 1st Movement.
A special event will take place to commemorate that unforgettable day 107 years ago, adding meaning to your historical journey. Join various experiences with family, friends, or loved ones!
