Gangju Sunflower Festival: A Summer Delight

By Lee Sang-hyun, 14th SNS Reporter
June marks the beginning of the Gangju Sunflower Festival, a representative flower festival of Ham-an. The yellow sunflowers bloom widely along the hills, creating a perfect atmosphere to enjoy the summer vibe and beautiful scenery.
Gangju Sunflower Festival

Festival Period: June 18 - July 2, 2026

When I visited on the weekend, I was surprised by the large crowd, much more than I expected. Temporary parking was set up around the village entrance to assist visitors, and safety measures were in place to manage the flow of vehicles and pedestrians.
There is a ticket booth at the entrance. You can enter only after purchasing your ticket and having it checked.
The path leading to the sunflower hill is enjoyable. Food stalls and event booths are operating together, offering a variety of snacks, crafts, local specialties, and accessories that attract tourists.
As you proceed, the path splits; the right leads to the second area, while the left takes you to the main sunflower hill.
On the day I visited, a caricature booth was very popular. It seemed to attract a lot of attention, likely due to the talented artists participating, which resulted in high satisfaction among visitors.
If you see a section of the wall adorned with flowers, you've arrived at the sunflower hill.
With each step, the scenery unfolds more vividly, leaving a strong impression. The scale and atmosphere exceeded my expectations, and I felt that this year's setup was quite beautiful.
Up close, the sunflowers are strikingly vibrant. The petals are bright yellow, and the center where the seeds form is clearly defined.
One reason the Gangju Sunflower Festival is famous is that it offers excellent opportunities for memorable photos. Many visitors were seen focusing on capturing photos in their favorite spots.
The scenery is truly like a fairy tale! As a yearly visitor, I believe it deserves to be called one of Korea's top sunflower festivals.
The area with the windmill is the most famous photo spot, and if you want to take unique photos, using the red tractor would be a great idea. Despite the cloudy weather on my visit, the contrast between the sky and the sunflowers created a different kind of beauty.
As a summer festival, the heat and humidity were the biggest challenges. Fortunately, there were fans set up in the huts for a nice break, and the colorful benches were surprisingly popular.
This festival represents Ham-an with its beautiful sunflower scenery, charming village atmosphere, experience booths, food options, and photo zones.
The Gangju Sunflower Festival will run until July 2. If you're looking for places to visit in Gyeongsangnam-do in June, I highly recommend this festival, which is beautifully arranged again this year. Make sure to visit!
