Exploring the Historical Beauty of Byeongyeongseong Fortress in Ulsan

In Jung-gu, Ulsan, there is a special walking spot called Byeongyeongseong Fortress, where you can enjoy both history and scenery close to the city center. This fortress was once the residence of the Gyeongsang Left Road Military Governor.
As summer approaches, the lush green grass becomes even more beautiful, making it a popular spot for night views while overlooking the Ulsan cityscape.
Due to its proximity to the city center, it is easily accessible and a perfect place to take a leisurely stroll whenever you want to unwind.
Byeongyeongseong is located near Ulsan Polytechnic University, and there is a dedicated parking lot right in front, making it convenient for visitors.
Many residents from nearby neighborhoods come here for a light walk, and there are also cafes nearby where you can enjoy the scenery.
When I first visited, I was struck by the open view, wondering, 'Is there really such a place close to Ulsan city center?' The atmosphere is peaceful and relaxed, making it an ideal location for family outings or quiet walks alone.
Byeongyeongseong was built in the 17th year of King Taejong's reign, utilizing a low hill of less than 45 meters above sea level to create an oval fortress surrounding a valley. It was an important stronghold responsible for defense for many years.
As a site that played a significant role in protecting the southeastern coast for a long time, traces of defensive structures and history can be found throughout the fortress. Although it was damaged during the Imjin War and the Jeongyu War, restoration projects since 2010 have helped it regain its former appearance.
Today, it is cherished as a historical site and a walking area for the citizens of Ulsan.
During the day, the beautiful scenery of the blue sky and grass is captivating, and at sunset, the atmosphere becomes truly beautiful with the addition of the sunset glow. At night, it is also known for its night views, allowing visitors to overlook Ulsan city from a high vantage point.
The walking path around Byeongyeongseong is surprisingly easy to walk on. The path follows the fortress walls and is about 1.2 km long, making it perfect for a slow stroll while enjoying the scenery.
There are resting areas along the way, and it is common to see families walking with children or people strolling with their dogs.
The views on both sides are slightly different; one side offers a panoramic view of Ulsan city, while the other combines the fortress with natural scenery. If you have the time, I recommend taking a slow walk around the entire area.
Along the walking path, there are informational signs explaining the structure and history of Byeongyeongseong, allowing visitors to learn about history while enjoying their walk.
Terms related to fortifications, such as bastions, moats, and redoubts, are explained in simple language, making it an excellent educational space for families visiting with children.
Another interesting aspect is that there are plenty of photo spots. The view from the top of the fortress is stunning, and the combination of the surrounding fields and ancient walls makes for great, emotional photographs. It's not uncommon to see couples taking wedding or couple photos due to the beautiful atmosphere.
With multiple access points, it's relatively easy to reach, and there are public parking lots and restrooms available for convenience. However, some stair sections can be steep, so it’s advisable to be cautious while walking at night.
Byeongyeongseong allows you to experience historical traces while enjoying beautiful scenery. It feels like a space where the past and present of Ulsan seamlessly connect. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a light stroll and some healing close to the city center.
