Exploring the Euisol Memorial Hall in Ulsan

As you enter a narrow alley in Byeongyeong-dong, Jung-gu, Ulsan, a significant cultural space reveals itself.
This is the Euisol Memorial Hall, dedicated to honoring the life and achievements of Choi Hyun-bae, a scholar of the Korean language and independence activist, who practiced the spirit of love for the Korean language and Hangul throughout his life.
The hall serves not just as a memorial but as a space to reflect on Hangul culture and national identity.
1. Basic Information and Location
Address: 15 Byeongyeong 12-gil, Jung-gu, Ulsan
Opening Hours: 09:00 AM - 06:00 PM
Admission Fee: Free
Closed: Every Monday, January 1st, and on the days of Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving)
The Euisol Memorial Hall is conveniently located near Byeongyeong Elementary School, with parking available in front of the hall. Most importantly, it is free to visit, making it easy to drop by.
2. Exhibition Composition
- The development of Hangul research and Korean linguistics
- The movement to preserve the Korean language during the Japanese occupation
- Activities of the Korean Language Society and efforts to compile a Korean dictionary
- The Hangul-only movement and educational activities
The interior of the memorial hall features a permanent exhibition hall, experience space, and video room. The permanent exhibition hall introduces the life of Choi Hyun-bae in the context of historical events. It goes beyond a simple biography, allowing visitors to understand how preserving Hangul is akin to preserving the nation.
3. Guided Tour Experience
During our visit, we had the opportunity to explore the hall with a cultural guide. The guide is available from 10:00 AM to 05:00 PM. Visiting during these hours allows for a deeper understanding of the exhibitions.
Hearing explanations about why Choi referred to Hangul as 'life', the significance of the Korean Language Society incident during the Japanese occupation, and the connection between language research and the independence movement made the experience much more vivid and memorable.
4. Experience Space
On the first floor of the Euisol Memorial Hall, a newly established Hangul experience space offers activities like Hangul magnets, typewriter experiences, and board games, making it especially enjoyable for families visiting with children.
I haven't yet visited this space with my child, but I plan to do so next time. The Euisol Memorial Hall provides historical significance for adults and experiential joy for children.
5. Birthplace of Euisol
Next to the memorial hall is the restored birthplace of Choi Hyun-bae. Although it is a small and modest space, standing at the starting point of someone who dedicated their life to preserving Hangul is a profound experience. Simple folk games like Yutnori and Tuho are also available for light enjoyment.
Overall, while the Euisol Memorial Hall isn't very large, it is rich in content and well-organized. Personally, the guided tour was the most impressive part of my visit. It provided a deeper understanding of the background and significance of the exhibits, making it a worthwhile experience.
If you're looking for an educational place to visit in Ulsan with your child or want to reflect on the meaning of Hangul, I highly recommend the Euisol Memorial Hall.
