Exploring the Delicacies of Yeongdeok and Pohang

When you think of Yeongdeok, the first food that comes to mind is definitely the snow crab.
If you take a leisurely stroll through the ports and fish markets of Yeongdeok and Pohang, you can encounter a variety of East Coast delicacies that have been cherished by locals for a long time, just like the snow crab.
In Gyeongbuk, there's a fish called 'Mijuguri,' which is actually the flatfish.
This fish is commonly caught along the East Coast and can be enjoyed in various ways, such as being dried and grilled or used in stews and braises.
Among the various cooking methods, sashimi allows you to truly appreciate its unique light flavor and chewy texture, especially in the form of Mijuguri mixed with sweet and sour vegetables.
To enjoy Mijuguri sashimi in Yeongdeok, freshness is key!
I recommend visiting Donggwang Fish Market in Yeongdeok and Jukdo Market in Pohang.
Once inside the market, you'll find tanks filled with various live fish and seafood, including Mijuguri.
Mijuguri is typically sold by the kilogram.
You can choose the desired amount and specify whether you want it cut with the bones or deboned, and the vendors will prepare it according to your preference.
If you want to enjoy a crunchy texture and nutty flavor, opt for sashimi with bones; if you're serving the whole family, the deboned version is softer and more suitable.
When ordering, simply tell the vendor, "Please give me 1 kg of Mijuguri for sashimi." I was able to buy 1 kg of prepared Mijuguri sashimi at Pohang's Jukdo Market for about 20,000 KRW.
Prices may vary depending on the season, catch volume, and store, so it's a good idea to check the weight, preparation method, and price before purchasing!
At Jukdo Market, you can also find seasonal fish like yellowtail and flatfish, in addition to Mijuguri.
You can purchase Mijuguri alone or mix it with other types of sashimi.
If you prefer a soft and light taste, Mijuguri alone is sufficient, but if you want to add a chewier texture, consider mixing in some yellowtail.
The combination of soft Mijuguri and chewy yellowtail enhances the flavor and texture of the sashimi dish.
When ordering for sashimi, the vendor will also prepare vegetables like radish and perilla leaves, cut into bite-sized pieces.
With just some dipping sauce, you can easily complete a delicious dish at your accommodation or home.
The prepared Mijuguri sashimi can be neatly packed for you to take home.
It's perfect for a simple dinner at your accommodation during your trip, and you won't need any complicated preparations at home.
The market vendors also provided radish and perilla leaves, and you can add crunchy vegetables like cabbage, onion, carrot, and cucumber for a heartier meal.
Just looking at the photos makes my mouth water.
The sweet and sour dressing, light Mijuguri, and crunchy vegetables come together to create a delightful sashimi dish.
Wrapping it generously in perilla leaves adds a fragrant touch, and you can pair the leftover dressing with rice or somen noodles.
While enjoying prepared food at a restaurant is nice, I found the process of selecting sashimi directly from the market and preparing it in the way I wanted to be quite enjoyable.
It was so delicious that I had it once in Pohang and once in Yeongdeok.
I still remember the taste I enjoyed while gazing at the sea over those two days.
On this culinary journey along the East Coast of Gyeongbuk, I experienced the connection between the sea, the market, and the food.
In the harbor, I encountered a wide-open sea view, while the market offered a glimpse into the vibrant local life and diverse seafood.
Meeting the refreshing scenery and fresh fish made my travels in Yeongdeok and Pohang even more enjoyable.
I especially wanted to introduce Mijuguri, a delicacy that locals have loved for a long time, in Yeongdeok, which is famous for its snow crab.
Don't miss out on Gyeongbuk's K-FOOD! Try the sweet and sour Mijuguri sashimi.
