Exploring the Beauty of Siheung Lotus Theme Park

[Reporter: Jeong Ji-won]
In August, filled with the refreshing essence of summer and lush greenery, I visited the Siheung Lotus Theme Park, a representative eco-healing destination near the metropolitan area. Strolling through the expansive lotus fields, one can admire the beautiful lotus flowers and encounter various creatures and nature, making it an ideal outing spot during the summer.
The park is not just a place to appreciate lotus flowers; it also holds historical significance and ecological value. The lotus flowers here carry a special story that dates back to the Joseon Dynasty, drawing even more attention.
The History of Lotus Flowers Since the Joseon Dynasty
One cannot discuss the history of Siheung Lotus Theme Park without mentioning the nearby Gwanggokji (官谷池). In 1463, during the 9th year of King Sejo's reign, scholar Gang Hee-maeng is said to have brought lotus seeds from Nanjing, China, and planted them in Gwanggokji, marking the beginning of Siheung's lotus flowers. This led to the area being referred to as 'Yeonseong' (莲城), meaning 'City of Lotus.' To preserve this historical and ecological significance, the city of Siheung developed extensive lotus cultivation areas near Gwanggokji, which are now open to the public as the Lotus Theme Park.
To Experience the Most Beautiful Lotus Flowers, Visit in the Morning
If you plan to visit the Lotus Theme Park, one important thing to remember is the timing of your visit. Lotus flowers typically bloom in the morning, displaying their beautiful petals, but they close up in the afternoon when the sun is strong. Therefore, to fully appreciate the blooming lotus flowers, it is recommended to visit early in the morning.
I arrived at the park during the time when the lotus flowers were beautifully blooming. Despite the early hour, the sunlight poured over the lotus fields. Since the area is largely wetland, there aren't many shaded spots, so summer visitors should consider bringing umbrellas, hats, sunglasses, and refreshing drinks.
As I entered the inner walking paths of the theme park, the first thing that caught my eye was the endless waves of green lotus leaves. Among the large lotus leaves, pink and white lotus flowers peeked out, capturing my gaze throughout my walk. The colors and shapes of the lotus petals were stunning when viewed up close.
Exploring various photo zones scattered throughout the park is also a great way to enjoy the different aspects of the lotus flowers.
Not Just a Place for Lotus Flowers, but an Ecological Space
The charm of the Lotus Theme Park lies not only in its beautiful flowers. As you walk along the paths, you can encounter various lives coexisting among the lotus flowers. Ducks swim gracefully on the calm water's surface, searching for food, and there are delightful fish sculptures and totem poles placed around the pond. The blue sky, green lotus leaves, and sculptures create a picturesque scene reminiscent of a watercolor painting.
This place is also ecologically significant. It is known as a habitat for endangered wildlife, such as the spoon-billed sandpiper and golden frogs. Throughout the walking paths, you can find information related to 'Spoon-billed Sandpiper protection,' making it an educational space for families visiting with children.
If You Feel Tired from the Heat, Take a Break at the Agricultural Technology Center
As you leisurely explore the vast lotus fields, you might find yourself sweating. Especially in summer, it’s important to take breaks, and I recommend utilizing the Siheung Agricultural Technology Center located in the center of the park.
Surrounding the building, there are temporary shade areas and benches for visitors, and inside, you can enjoy the cool air conditioning along with a café and a shop selling lotus-related products. If you feel exhausted from the heat while admiring the lotus flowers, it’s a great place to relax with a refreshing drink. The shop offers various products made by local farmers, including lotus root powder, lotus chips, lotus tea, and cute ceramic items, making it enjoyable to browse.
