2026 Geochang International Theater Festival Highlights

In 2026, the Geochang International Theater Festival showcased various performances at the Gaon Theater of Geochang Theater High School.
Hello, I am Lee Won-pil from the Geochang Public Relations Reporter Group.
The 36th Geochang International Theater Festival featured performances from 10 selected groups out of over 50 participants after the preliminary judging.
Each performance offered a unique story, and the passion of the actors was palpable, allowing us to experience new charms in every show.
On a scorching hot day, I headed to the Gaon Theater, leaving the intense sunlight behind, eagerly anticipating the performances.
(*Photography was not allowed during the performances, so we captured curtain call videos instead.)
One of the performances was a special show by the Geochang Theater High School's Forest Troupe, titled 'Winter Yard Play.'

As I entered the theater, I noticed the actors preparing for the show, greeting the audience with bright smiles while also showing signs of nervousness. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed, creating warm moments even while waiting for the performance.
The 'Winter Yard Play,' performed by students of Geochang Theater High School, combined humorous acting with lively movements, making it enjoyable from start to finish.
The Forest Troupe, based in Geochang, presents original musicals and plays, participating in the Geochang International Theater Festival.
'Winter Yard Play' tells the story of Jeong Eun, a scholar who maintained his integrity during the Imjin War, criticizing the failures of King Gwanghae and enduring a 10-year exile in Jeju Island. After being reinstated post-Injo Restoration, he attempts suicide in the face of the humiliating surrender during the Manchu invasions, ultimately retreating to his hometown to live a simple, honest life.
From July 28 to August 6, the 36th Geochang International Theater Festival featured various performances.
One notable performance was by the 'Pungdeung Troupe,' titled 'The Joy of Deformity.'
Date: July 28 (Tue) 16:00
Genre: Play
Recommended Age: 15 and older
Running Time: 100 minutes
Free Admission
'The Joy of Deformity' explores not physical deformities but the twisted forms within humanity. It challenges the norms defined by society and redefines deformity through love. The play questions, 'Who is deformed, and what is deformity?' It presents a deep existential narrative that resonates with contemporary audiences.
Each performance was a unique experience filled with diverse stories and expressions, showcasing the actors' passionate performances and various genres. From comedic pieces to deeply moving performances, all were truly remarkable.
As the festival concluded, I felt grateful for the opportunity to witness such outstanding theater in Geochang.
