Did you know that Baengnok trees are in bloom at the Goryeodong Historic Site?
As you approach the site, you can see the Baengnok trees proudly displaying their blossoms.
The name Baengnok comes from the fact that these trees bloom for about 100 days, also known as 'Mokbaekilhong' or 'Baekilhong Tree'.
Flowers do not bloom all at once; as one flower wilts, another blooms, creating a continuous display of beauty for approximately 100 days.
The parking lot is conveniently located, and there are public restrooms near the entrance.
As you step down from the parking area, you'll first encounter a large Baengnok tree. There are benches nearby, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the shade.
The Goryeodong Historic Site is where Lee Oh, a scholar from the late Goryeo period, established a community dedicated to preserving loyalty to Goryeo after the founding of Joseon. They maintained self-sufficiency and upheld their principles, with descendants residing here for over 600 years.
Today, the site features tranquil traditional houses, stone walls, and the vibrant Baengnok blossoms that bloom every summer.
There is a designated protected Baengnok tree measuring 8 meters tall and 1.3 meters in circumference. This tree, also known as the Jamina tree, symbolizes Lee Oh's loyalty to Goryeo.
If you look closely, you can still find many Baengnok trees with just budding flowers. As they continue to bloom, the site will soon be filled with even more beautiful blossoms.
This year, the blooming has been slightly delayed due to drought.
Once the pink flowers fully bloom, they will create an even more picturesque scene at the serene Goryeodong Historic Site.
The site is open for visitors, allowing you to explore at your own pace. Although it seems that no descendants currently reside here, the well-maintained grounds suggest regular care and attention.
Upon entering through the first gate, you will see the Jamijeong building. Parts of the historic site, including Jamijeong, were lost during the Korean War but have been relatively well restored.
Behind Jamijeong, there is a small pond where residents likely enjoyed the view of the outdoors from their rooms.
What thoughts might they have had while observing the simple stone wall paths?
Just like the Baengnok trees that bloom for a hundred days, the Goryeodong Historic Site has preserved its integrity through the ages.
If you visit Hamyang, don’t miss the chance to see the beautiful Baengnok blossoms at Goryeodong Historic Site. Although they aren't fully bloomed yet, the sight of budding flowers is quite exciting.
With the quiet traditional houses, charming stone walls, and vibrant Baengnok trees, the summer scenery is enchanting.
After this weekend's gentle rain, consider visiting the Goryeodong Historic Site.
