Exploring Myeongseondo: A Nighttime Adventure
I recently visited Myeongseondo, a popular nighttime attraction often referred to as Avatar Island.
Getting there was quite a journey for me, as I faced several challenges before finally gaining entry on my third attempt.
After two unsuccessful visits, I finally walked through the illuminated island and explored the Wish Path towards Gangyang Port across Myeongseong Bridge.
Myeongseondo is an island connected to the mainland by a bridge, making it accessible on foot. However, the timing of the tides and weather conditions can be tricky.
During my attempts, I learned firsthand about these challenges. It’s advisable to check with the management office if weather conditions seem unusual before planning your visit.
On my first visit, the sky was clear, and I assumed I could enter without issue. However, when I arrived, the entrance was closed due to strong winds. The bridge to Myeongseondo, being over the sea, is often restricted for safety reasons when winds are high.
After two failed attempts, I realized that clear weather does not guarantee access, as Myeongseondo frequently has entry restrictions. Even if you time your visit with the tides, strong winds can still prevent entry.
After waiting for about two weeks, I finally heard that Myeongseondo had reopened and decided to try again.
This time, the atmosphere was different. I could enter the island without any obstacles, and the feeling of finally stepping in was exhilarating after my previous failures.
The bridge made of palm mats leads directly to Myeongseondo, and walking on the path I had previously turned back from felt incredibly satisfying.
By the time I entered the island, all the lights were already on, revealing a completely different face compared to the serene island I had seen during the day.
As I walked in, colorful lights adorned the trees, creating a dynamic atmosphere as I strolled along the path.
The paths were lined with soft lighting, making it easy to see my feet even in the dark. As I ventured deeper, alternating red and blue lights transformed the ambiance.
One of the most impressive aspects was the media art installations using rocks and trees, creating an illusion of movement with projected images.
As I walked, I paused several times to take in the sights. While photos captured the beauty, nothing compared to the three-dimensional experience of seeing it in person.
Passing through the lush green forest, I noticed fluorescent patterns painted on each step of the stairs, adding a playful element that children would particularly enjoy.
In the middle of the path, large snow-shaped lights and smiling mouth shapes hung between the trees, bringing a smile as they appeared unexpectedly in the dark forest.
The most popular photo spot on Myeongseondo is undoubtedly the heart-shaped sculpture, glowing softly against the backdrop of the sea.
As I walked around the island, I found a spot where the night view of Jinha Beach was visible, with colorful lights reflecting on the sand.
Completing the loop around the island took about 20-30 minutes, and the time flew by as I discovered new lighting displays along the way.
After my two failed attempts, entering Myeongseondo felt even more special, and the lights all around created a captivating nighttime atmosphere.
As I continued walking, I caught glimpses of Myeongseong Bridge through the trees, and the view from the island was entirely different from seeing it from the mainland.
Across the bridge lies the Wish Path, which I had never walked before. This coastal walking path stretches 10 km along the southern coast.
After crossing Myeongseong Bridge, I immediately found myself on the coastal deck path, which was an absolute delight.
The deck, elevated above the rocky shore, offered stunning views of the waves crashing below.
The path curved gently along the coastline, creating beautiful scenery perfect for photographs.
There are also spacious viewing decks along the way, providing benches to sit and enjoy the view of Myeongseondo.
As night fell, the deck lights illuminated the path, creating a magical atmosphere.
Walking along the deck, I could see Myeongseong Bridge from a different perspective, with its lights reflecting on the water, making it an ideal spot for night photography.
Overall, my visit to Myeongseondo was filled with unexpected discoveries, and I recommend checking the conditions before visiting to avoid disappointment.
