Exploring Gosan Natural Recreation Forest: A Personal Review

I recently visited Gosan Natural Recreation Forest located in Gosan-myeon, Wanju-gun, Jeollabuk-do. Nestled at the foot of Ansusan Mountain, the area is surrounded by dense forests of larch and pine trees, and I was immediately greeted by the fresh air as I entered the park. In this article, I will introduce the natural environment, facilities, and the wellness accommodation where I stayed.
While exploring the recreation forest, I was particularly drawn to the 'Forest Biomass Promotion Center.' This exhibition space provides an easy-to-understand introduction to domestic woody biomass energy sources. Initially, I intended to take a quick look, but I ended up spending quite some time there due to the informative content.
The exhibition explained the principles of forest biomass energy. It was impressive to learn that the carbon dioxide emitted when using woody biomass as fuel is equivalent to the amount absorbed by trees during their growth, thus contributing to the prevention of global warming without additional carbon emissions.
Utilizing and industrializing domestic woody biomass energy sources could potentially lead to an investment effect of about 10 trillion won and create 2 million jobs annually through the establishment of biomass power plants and fuel supply businesses. This highlighted the potential of biomass as a new growth industry for the nation.
Gosan Natural Recreation Forest produces wood chips using timber and by-products from local forest management, supplying heating and hot water to all buildings in the park through a 400kW wood chip boiler and approximately 1.5 km of heat piping since January 1, 2017.
Considering that South Korea has the fourth highest forest coverage rate among OECD countries, it was meaningful to see that the forest resources in Wanju-gun are being utilized as a practical energy source beyond just a recreational space.
After visiting the promotion center, I noticed the cooking area and walking paths in the forest. I saw families enjoying picnics and individuals reading books on benches under the trees. The scene of people enjoying their leisure time in nature was truly peaceful.
Throughout the recreation forest, there are pavilions and resting areas available for rent through online reservations. You can select Gosan Natural Recreation Forest on the Forest Trip website to book a pavilion or resting area for your desired date.
The accommodation that left a lasting impression on me was the wellness lodge. Unlike typical nature recreation lodges that may feel outdated, the wellness lodge completely shattered that stereotype. The exterior was clean, and I was surprised by the modern and stylish interior as soon as I entered the room.
Recently remodeled, the wellness lodge offers a comfortable stay with various cooking tools, including a microwave, induction stove, and rice cooker, allowing guests to prepare simple meals. However, cooking strong-smelling foods should be done in the outdoor barbecue area.
My experience at Gosan Natural Recreation Forest was more than just a clean accommodation; it was a harmonious blend of nature and convenience. The informative exhibitions and the comfort of the remodeled rooms were the highlights of my stay.
If you're hesitant to book an overnight stay, reserving a pavilion or resting area for a day trip to enjoy the forest is also a great option. If you plan to visit Wanju, I recommend taking some time to relax at Gosan Natural Recreation Forest.
