Exploring Daepyeong Wetland in Hamann

Daepyeong Wetland, located in Daepyeong Village, Hamann, is one of the nine scenic spots of Hamann and is designated as a natural monument.
It is known as the only wetland plant protection area in South Korea, serving as a precious ecological space where various wetland plants and creatures thrive.
At the entrance of Daepyeong Village, there is a parking lot for visitors. Next to the parking area, an information board introduces the history and stories of Daepyeong Village.
Across from the parking lot, there is a deck walkway leading towards the Daepyeong Wetland. As you walk along the path, you will naturally encounter the wetland.
Upon arriving at the expansive Daepyeong Wetland, the impressive blend of lush mountains and wetlands captivates visitors. The fact that this wetland is not easily found in urban areas makes it even more remarkable, along with its designation as a natural monument.
If you spot a sign indicating the wetland plants of Dae Song Ri, you can park nearby for a moment. There is a resting area where you can take a break while enjoying the view of the wetland.
Along the edges of the wetland, lotus leaves and various aquatic plants were growing. The unique scent of the grass was also noticeable. Depending on the season, the flowers bloom and the vegetation changes, making it a place to experience different scenery at various times of the year.
As I walked along the deck path, I came across a resting area that offered a comfortable view of the wetland. Here, there is a signboard introducing the formation, ecological environment, and conservation value of Daepyeong Wetland, allowing visitors to learn more about it while taking a break.
It is said that the An family from Gwangju preserved the wetland for the prosperity of their descendants based on the principles of geomancy. The area spans over 30,000 pyeong, with depths reaching up to 2 meters in some places. This emphasizes how much larger and deeper the wetland is than it appears.
Rest areas and benches are scattered throughout the area. The sight of the drooping willow branches swaying in the wind was quite striking. This space is perfect for taking a moment to slowly appreciate the scenery of Daepyeong Wetland.
Sitting here, you can take in the entire view of Daepyeong Wetland. It was a great spot to quietly listen to the sound of the wind while enjoying the wetland's beauty.
The surroundings of the wetland are relatively well-maintained, providing a pleasant environment for walking. It’s impressive how the area has been developed to allow close observation of nature without causing significant damage.
However, as there is limited shade, I recommend bringing an umbrella if you visit during this time.
Lotus flowers are expected to bloom soon, and I look forward to seeing the fragrant and dreamy blossoms that will enhance the scenery.
On the way back, I also explored the landscape of Daepyeong Village, which was filled with the tranquility and leisure characteristic of rural areas. The combination of murals and houses was quite beautiful.
Being able to see and feel the wetland up close makes this a special place. I highly recommend visiting if you want to explore the hidden gems of Hamann.
