Discovering Healing and Nature in Gijang's Forests

By Gijang-gun SNS Supporter, Song Ji-ae
In November, as the autumn foliage reached its peak in 2025, I visited the Forest of Healing in Gijang, Busan.
Forests of Healing are designed to utilize diverse environmental elements of the forest to enhance the human body's immunity and promote overall health.
Gijang, Busan, boasts two such forests: the Busan Forest of Healing in Cheolma, opened in 2017, and the Jangan Forest of Healing in Jangan, opened in 2023. While each forest possesses its unique charm, they share a common goal: to provide a special sanctuary where visitors can rejuvenate their bodies and minds amidst nature.
I began my journey at the Busan Forest of Healing.
The sight of the beautifully colored autumn leaves along the path to the Busan Forest of Healing filled me with anticipation.
The Busan Forest of Healing is an urban resting place where nature and people coexist.
Here, you'll find meditation paths perfect for quiet reflection and forest therapy programs that offer healing and rejuvenation in nature.
I strolled through the tranquil Busan Forest of Healing on a weekday.
A round trip on the central promenade, stretching from the visitor center at the entrance to the large rock shelter, takes only about 40 minutes. The path is gently sloped, making it ideal for a light walk and a chance to unwind.
I gazed up at the vibrant yellow and red American trees.
The sound of the flowing water created a soothing melody as I walked, naturally experiencing the forest healing that boosts immunity and restores physical and emotional well-being.
Whether you visit in the spring when flowers bloom, the summer when everything is lush and green, or the autumn when the leaves change color and fall, the Busan Forest of Healing offers a chance to fully embrace nature's breath. I felt a desire to walk the entire length of the Forest of Contemplation path someday.
The trees in the Busan Forest of Healing, which fill the air with phytoncides, are labeled. Scanning the QR code with your phone connects you to the Korea Forest Service for more information.
If you've reached the Forest Healing Garden, you're almost at the large rock shelter. If the stairs leading up to the shelter seem daunting, I recommend taking a break in the Forest Healing Garden before turning back.
However, if you want to fully enjoy the autumn foliage, I encourage you to climb up to the large rock shelter.
I rested for a while on a bench at the large rock shelter. If I had any shadows in my heart before visiting the Forest of Healing, I felt healed by the natural energy emanating from the rock shelter.
I headed back to the entrance of the Busan Forest of Healing with a light heart.
Located at the edge of Gijang in Busan, the Jangan Forest of Healing opened in 2023.
The Jangan Forest of Healing features a forest playground, a meditation forest, and walking trails.
In the lush Jangan Forest of Healing, I answered the "Who Am I?" quiz while immersing myself in the forest's fragrance and phytoncides.
Autumn had already arrived in the Jangan Forest of Healing.
Currently, a forest experience center for young children is under construction next to the forest playground in the Jangan Forest of Healing.
Although it opened in 2023, the parking facilities and road leading to the Jangan Forest of Healing are not yet fully complete. The road from the entrance of the Gijang Jangan Forest of Healing is a narrow mountain path that barely fits one car. Conversely, coming down from the forest playground along the cypress tree path, road construction is in progress. Once this area is improved, accessibility to the Jangan Forest of Healing will be greatly enhanced.
I hope for a quick completion of the construction so that more people can visit and enjoy forest therapy in the Jangan Forest of Healing. I look forward to seeing many people visit the Jangan Forest of Healing after the improvements are made and various forest programs are offered.
