A Visit to the Jangansingi Pine Forest Park in Gijang-gun

I visited the Jangansingi Pine Forest Park, a veterans' park in Gijang-gun.
Gijang-gun is home to many parks, each with its unique characteristics. Among them, the Jangansingi Pine Forest Park (509-3 Giryong-ri, Jang-an-eup, Busan) is recognized as a veterans' park.
Though not very large, this park features memorials for distinguished service members, including those who served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War, making it a significant site for veterans and a place for security education.
My son's family came to celebrate the Lunar New Year, and I wanted to create special memories for my granddaughter, who is now in the second grade. So, we decided to visit the Jangansingi Pine Forest Park.
The park is located on the way to Jangansa Temple, a thousand-year-old site. Despite being called a 'small park,' it has several beautiful old pine trees, which I realized contributed to its name.
The walking paths among the pines were pleasant to stroll along. I also spotted a pavilion called Ilsongjeong, which reminded me of the song 'Ilsongjeong Blue Pine,' a classic Korean piece.
Next to the pavilion, there are memorial stones honoring the contributions of public officials and those who died in the line of duty.
There is also a stone monument for the song 'Military Mail with Fragrance,' released in 1952, written by Park Geum-ho and composed by Na Hwa-rang, sung by Yoo Chun-san. I was delighted to find it on YouTube, as it was a song from my childhood.
The park features memorials for distinguished service members, including those from the Korean War and Vietnam War, standing side by side. The 'Gijang-gun Distinguished Service Memorial' was the first to be erected on May 25, 2001, honoring the valor and dedication of local veterans.
The memorial, covering an area of 66 square meters, consists of a pedestal with a main stone made of white granite, engraved with the names and honors of 70 distinguished service members from Gijang-gun.
The memorial for the 'Korean War Veterans' lists the names of 1,263 veterans from Gijang-gun, constructed on December 17, 2018, to commemorate their honor and enhance local awareness of national defense.
Although the park is not very large, it is a wonderful place to walk and reflect on those who sacrificed for the country. Unfortunately, my granddaughter fell asleep before we arrived. I had hoped to share stories about those who gave their lives for our nation, but I decided to let her rest after such a long journey from Seoul.
One day, I hope to fulfill my dream of sharing these stories with her.
