A Unique City Where Industry Meets Art: Pohang

A Unique City Where Industry Meets Art
Pohang
Pohang is commonly remembered for its massive steel industry and industrial city image.
However, recently, a new movement has emerged in this city, blending industrial landscapes with cultural arts.
At the center of this is the art network 'PART-Forest Art Forever,' created by local artists and cultural figures.
We wanted to promote Pohang through art.
I interviewed Yang Yoon-jung, the director of ◯◯ Gallery, which is at the heart of the Pohang art network.
Director Yang believes that art can firmly establish itself even within Pohang's industrial city image.
Based on this belief, the ongoing project includes 23 artists who have contributed their works, sharing a common vision.
"I hope it becomes an opportunity for many visitors from across the country to come to Pohang."
Currently, PART-Forest Art Forever is expanding its scope beyond exhibitions to include outreach performances and cultural service activities.
Additionally, they are conducting installation art projects using recycled materials, further extending the social role of art.
This August's art fair was also planned with this purpose in mind.
“The process of getting to know each other is the beginning of art.”
Kim Dae-rak, the chief director, hopes this project will serve as a chance for local artists to understand and connect with one another, going beyond a simple exhibition.
“Even if we are active in the same area, we often do not know each other well. I hope this opportunity allows us to get to know each other and empathize.”
He also explained that the process of various artists gathering to share their work and thoughts can be a driving force for local artistic development.
“Understanding each other's work and learning about individual tendencies will ultimately lead to better works and a healthier artistic ecosystem.”
Another important goal of this project is to discover hidden local artists and create a foundation for mutual growth.
New Perspectives Discovered by Pohang's Sea
Kim Min-hee, a Western painter participating in this exhibition, shared her experience of how her artistic world has changed within the landscapes of Pohang.
The shimmering sea reflecting sunlight provided her with new inspiration and energy.
“Blue can feel cold, but to me, it is a warm color. I gained the strength to make a new start in that moment.”
Kim's work goes beyond merely reproducing local landscapes; it emphasizes the significance of individual emotions and attitudes toward viewing landscapes.
The dynamic landscapes created by massive industrial facilities, the tranquility conveyed by the blue sea, and the artistic sensibilities encountered throughout the city.
Pohang is a travel destination where different charms coexist within a single city.
Go beyond familiar tourist spots and discover the stories of Pohang's artworks and local artists.
You will encounter new aspects of Pohang that you may not have noticed before.
In this journey, beyond the city of sea and industry, experience the blooming art of Pohang!
